My web host provider shut down my site today because the AE script was using more than 10% of the server resources for the month which is in violation of their TOS
    Here is the report
    Top Process %CPU 38.0 /usr/local/bin/perl evalue.pl
    Top Process %CPU 37.0 /usr/local/bin/perl evalue.pl
    Top Process %CPU 26.0 /usr/local/bin/perl evalue.pl

How do I reduce this server load to stay within the TOS and keep customers shopping?

I guess you mean by "real" host a dedicated server plan??

I need to use one in CA in order to write it off for taxes and I am not going to pay huge $$ for hosting when the script doesnot make huge $$ to cover it. But I am checking with hostroute abouat dedicated pricing maybe shared with one other client.

    Thanks for shooting from hip!

    Dedicated's great!

It's just like having your own place--you can turn the "heat" up to 90F if you want to and no one can b*tch

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR> I am not going to pay huge $$ for hosting when the script doesnot make huge $$ to cover it. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

I wouldn't do it just for one script, but there's other benefits:

Sites are made live when you want--no waiting for "tech" to get to you
It doesn't cost extra to add sites
You can run anything you want as long as it doesn't break the law--not just this script, but any script
You can do other cool stuff that a shared host would hate, like have the whole server set up to parse html as shtml (no htaccess junk required)
    SSH access
Your sites can be massive beyond imagination and you'll still have disk space left
    Lotsa bandwidth
You can brag about how you have a Dedicated Server

I ran amazon.pl for years on shared hosting, without problems and with nice sales volume. So if you aren't ready for your own server, you need to shop for a shared host that will work with you and can accomodate your needs. A smart host can certainly put your site on a machine that has a lot of "quiet" sites on it so the server isn't overloaded.

if you pay by credit card, you can copy the invoice for taxes.
I use 5 different hosts. All are US companies.

My accountant has no problem using the PPC and odd other US based expenses for my Canadian taxes. Just convert to Canadian amount and write it off
    This doesn't seem right
Have you rechecked your accountant about this??

Well they suspended my site again. Here is what Gordon Hudson of Hostroute.ca emailed me:

    Hello
I unsuspended the account immediately on answering your original enquiry.
You did not make any changes and the server slowed to a standstill for about 8 hours.
I have now suspended the account again to allow other customers to use their accounts.

If this is not a satisfactory outcome please go to
    http://helpdesk.hostroute.com
    and reopen the ticket.

Having my site down. What kind of drugs is this guy on thinking I would be satisfied with this outcome.
Can anyone recommend a good web host, possibly share a dedicated server with another client.
Need about 1000mb space and want quick response on queries.

If I can write off a web host based in the US then I will probably move my site there.....

    Thanks
    Dan

    Dan,

I was in the same situation as you a little over a month ago..

    Top Process %CPU 68.0
    Top Process %CPU 42.8
    Top Process %CPU 28.0
This site is out of chances.

I didn't think i was ready for a dedicated server but to speed up the process I had them move me over to one. They were very accomodating and did all the work & within 24hrs I was up and running.

Do I make enough to afford this, maybe kinda sorta on a good month with a good tailwind .

Am I going to stay on a dedicated server and maybe look for a less expensive one, yes.

I checked out Rackspace a couple of times but at $350+ a month it's not an option.

You might wonder why am I going to stay with dedicated if I'm barely making enough to cover it's cost. Well Leader hit it right on the head..

The options and improvement are endless.
On shared I could only delete 300 records from my db without sweating about hogging the server. Now I delete 1500 at a time. If I'm deleting 4,500 records I used to have to do 15 deletes to my current 3. That saves me a bit over 2hrs worth of my time.

I can add what I want, when I want, test different products without worrying about the watchful eye, and I still get the management of a shared server. I even donated some bandwidth to a good cause that was in trouble of having their host pull their account because of bandwidth usage..

To me, the time-savings and flexibility outweigh the cost. I plan on really making a go at it this year and hope this will only help me reach my goals.

You can check out some suggested hosts at http://abw.infopop.cc/eve/ubb.x?a=tp...9&m=9181018801 if you decide to look into it more.

    Hope that helps..

Very timely thread. AE used up 85% of my bandwidth (to be more precise the AJ robot did). I had to ban it in robots.txt but now the reasoning for going dedicated is very clear.

I lease three dedicated servers from ev1servers.net for a little under $600/mth total. All of them primarily run AE-based sites and are highly profitable.

I think someone may be giving you bad tax advice.

Are you saying that if Air Canada leases a plane direct from Airbus or Boeing they can't claim a deduction bcause the invoice isn't from a Canadian company?

If you're letting the person that advised the above do your tax returns, it might be time to seek out someone with better knowledge of how it all works.
