You can mod it to just include the OS you're using. That one will display either nix or windows.

I don't know if there are any safe_mode on/off requirements.

    Thanks Both,

Pete... I found that one when I googled earlier but didn't make any progress with it - yet

Chris, that is awesome.... my physical memory is 99% used on my server here.... that explains why it's running so slow!! LOL Time for an upgrade

Maybe not. My redhat server is always using all memory.
eg Mem: 1533416k av, 1482044k used, 51372k free

But it's not actually using all that memory. I don't know how it works exactly, but it's like it pre-reserves it for when it is needed causing it to show as used.

Well, when I try to do anything on it things go very slowly.... I guess it was using the swapfile, but cos the server is downstairs and I'm up I didn't realise. It's ok now I did a re-boot though

The server is downstairs, but you don't have SSH access?

    try putting

    top n 1 b|mail -s serverload yourmail@example.com

into your cron file and have it run how often you want to check things.

Then you can an email every couple of hours (or whenever) giving you server load, resource usage and a list of running processes so you can see if any have decided to go crazy and hog resources.

You have a server in your basement and no ssh access to it? What's wrong with this picture?

Take a look at MRTG. No need to reinvent the wheel. MRTG can monitor server load, traffic, cpu usage, and much more.
