Steve Messer must be thrilled over this one since OverStock the first major e-tailer to join Linkshare, not drop out, in many months. OverStock was a BeFree staple and earned me some bucks over the years. Reporting of sales dropped off big time since January on the same levels of traffic. Might be an interface problem BF ignored or refused to fix. No question of Overstock stiffing affiliates or BF since they are an honest group ..but something had to go sour to get them to move.

Whoopie ..now I get 7 day cookies after I locate 500+ links on 3 sites and replace them. Gotta do it since they are the only profitable major e-tailer on the NET and one thta has something for every budget shopper. I don't buy the crappola profit figures from Amazon last quarter as Bezos likes to cook the books to dupe his stock investors.

Merchants like OverStock should have to find some kind of reward for loyal affiliates if they expose them to hundreds of hours of work on a promise. My reward would be to have the BF links track sales til the 22nd since it will take that long to replace them. Just wish they went to CJ so I don't have to wait 4 months to see my first LS check.

I harped on them to up the cookie duration -stop feeding deals to the parasites & Gator via auto loads and work out individual product links. They promise this will happen now they moved to LS where I can make links to any producct. Andy at TD could teach them about curing "stock out" discountinued item pages by redirects to a top of category page. It will take them some time for their new affiliate manager Shawn to get used to the LS merchant interface. He does communicate with his group right on time so maybe it was the communication barrier at BF thta made them move.

Be a nice test to compare the BF reporting since Mid January to the results of the LS campaign starting now. I'll have mixed link codes for some time til I find them all but BeFree's cut off the reports to OverStock.

Just a note for Overstock affiliates,
Overstock is not and has never been profitable. They just filed with the SEC for an IPO. Although the company began to call itself profitable halfway through 2000, its SEC filing shows that it actually lost $8 million in 1999, $21 million in 2000 and $13 million in 2001.

Overstock is all hype. The prices are no better than Amazon.com, Buy.com, and a dozen other online retailers.

At one time OverStock carried 8000 SKU's on a private deal with Amazon where they fulfilled all those orders. If you need some insight and inspiration into the man behind Overstock ..Patrick Byrnes ..read their news section about his history. He told the VC capitalists and IdealLab type guys to get out of his office and life a long time ago.

He saw a niche' and need for moving excess inventories, DotCom bankrupties, factory refurbished name brand goods at prices and terms that would please online shoppers. They sell 10 million dollars of goods per week ..all warehoused and shipped by themselves regardless of order size for 3.95. I gave them a list 2 years ago of 7 objections online shoppers would have to buying excess inventories and they solved everyone of them in writing.

Lean mean machine that IS PROFITABLE once they reach 15 million in sales per month which is a piece of cake for them. Take a look at their prices and underneith them is a 25% gross markup. That's purchasing power and a smart business does show a small loss to limit tax exposure as it expands operations -warehousing -inventories and reach.

Now they just need to get real affiliate friendly and not greedy by playing with the Adware/Spywarez and ShopNow folks.

    Greetings All!

Yes, it's true - we moved to LinkShare. I have a bit of functionality at my fingertips within the LinkShare network that I did not have within BeFree. I know migrations can be a pain, and I apologize for the inconvenience this has caused everyone. In an attempt to lesson the blow, and to foster better relationships with our Affiliates, we upped the Return Days from "same day" to "7 days".

I wish I could answer questions brought up about our profitability, but we are currently in a "quite period" and I am unable to comment right now.

If anyone has any problems, questions, etc, concerning the migration to LinkShare, please contact me at <a href:"mailto:shawn@overstock.com">shawn@overstock.com</a>. I'm here to help.

In the near future, I plan on rolling out new features to our Affiliates. There are several technilogical advances that I can take advantage of within LinkShare that will boost conversion rates, which in turn will increase revenue and commissions. If you have ideas, please send them my way, I'm always open to suggestions.

    Thank you for your support,

    Shawn,

    Welcome! <IMG src=http://www.abestweb.com/smilies/welcome.gif>

I am sure the move to LS will afford us all a greater level of profitablity. <IMG src=http://www.abestweb.com/ubb/icons/icon14.gif>

While I have your attention, may I ask your position on ParasiteWare™? I have noticed many a SaveNow (WhenU) pop up on sites ... will the switch to LS finally end that?

    Haiko,

Please forgive me, as I am still new to this market. What exactly do you mean by "ParasiteWare"? I don't fully understand all of the issues. If you could give me some feedback, I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks,

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>Overstock is all hype. The prices are no better than Amazon.com, Buy.com, and a dozen other online retailers.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>Gotta disagree with that one, Jimbo. I just joined Overstock recently (since the linkshare move) and I haven't started promoting them yet (not enough hours in the day), but the reason I joined was pricing.

I did some quick comparisons (less than 1/2 hours worth of work and found the following):

    Toy Story 2 DVD
    OVER: 19.99
    AMAZON: 35.99
    AMAZON USED: 24.99

    MIB
    OVER: 9.99
    AMAZON: 16.99

    Sony PlayStation One Game Console
    OVER: 69.99
    AMAZON: 99.99
    AMAZON USED: 89.99

    Winnie-the-Pooh 3-piece Crib Set
    OVER: $49.99
    AMAZON ZSHOP: $99.99

    Logitech QuickCam Express (USB)
    OVER: 28.99
    AMAZON: 42.70

Bachmann Limited Edition Monopoly Train Set
    OVERSTOCK: 74.99
    AMAZON: 139.99

Are a lot of the electronics a generation old (and sometimes more)? Yes. Can you get good deals on them? YES.

It's like any other "bargain" store -- you have to know prices before you go in, but if you do, you can get some GREAT deals.

    Shawn,

ParasiteWare™ is free to download or sneaky download browser "enhancements" that utilize contextual advertising methods and steal commissions from affiliates and sales from other merchants. Examples of the companies are NetPal, WhenU and Ezula. I understand the the new LS agreement precludes WhenU, but I just wanted to make sure that there aren't any existing agreements with them, that we should be worried about.

We have a Forum dedicated to identifying and fighting it, here is an example pf a WhenU (SaveNow) popup:

As far as the "Overstock is all hype. The prices are no better than Amazon.com, Buy.com, and a dozen other online retailers" comment goes, I have to refer to our best price guarantee, viewable at the following link: http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2....AGE&PAGE_ID=27

So, if your customer finds a better price for our products online, we will refund them the difference. We spend a lot of time scouring the web to ensure our prices are lowest for the products we carry.

As for the "ParasiteWare", please give me a few days to research this further. I like to make sure I have all of the facts prior to making any decisions, and I need more information. Rest assured, I will reply again in a few days about this issue. I plan on reviewing the forum you mentioned, but if there is specific information you could send me beyond anything in the forum, I'm all ears.

Many thanks for all the emails and comments. Our affiliates are extremely important to us.

    Thanks,

I like the commitment by Overstock to selling at a low price the handicrafts and artworks of Overseas artisens. I see these collectables are sold at no more than a 5% markup so these gifted craftsmen can earn their daily bread and some left over for their fellow villagers. Real stuff real cheap and I'll showcase some of these products. Please setup a category creative link to these and your collectables.

Hope you have as many category links and some mini-storefronts like there were at BeFree. Makes it easier for replacing BF links. I liked you idea Shawn on rich media rotating side by side displays of the top sellers in each category. These don't have to be updated and should increase sales.

Check out LinkShare to take advantage of "Global Handmade Designs (WorldStock)" links for the department and each of the categories listed under WorldStock. I just completed all of the text links.

Let me know if there is anything else you need, and thanks for the suggestions,

It was a bumpy start with BeFrees tracking code choking LS's tracking cookie ...and vise versa. One or the other, but NOT both, or no sales tracked. The suggested site redesign and moving to better control of landing pages, DRMs and offering a huge selection of creatives led to a head to head battle with TigerDirect at ABW for best monthly conversion ratios. That battle made us all money. Wow I miss those times when suggestions were implimented, AM's listened, and company's relied upon their value add affiliates for continuous growth.
