I'm decent at SEO with my own site but I'm totally new to affiliate programs. Thus, these beginner questions.

    1) Do you need permission from the merchant to run an AdWord ad with the merchant's URL showing?

    2) How do you code the actual tracking link in AdWords? I'm confused by the two tracking URLs, one in an tag and one in an tag, that came with the approval email. One isn't enough?

    Thank you for your time.

    1) Look at the merchant agreement and see if they allow you to use their trademark name or not.

Some merchants do not restrict it and many others do.

    2) The entire link should be used in the link portion of adwords and the merchant name would be used (if it can be) as the name the url is directed too. Note, the 1x1 pixel is used for tracking impressions by the network and is not really needed to be used but some merchants require it and some don't. You're safer using it than not and in the case of adwords who will keep track of clicks and impressions as well you will be able to verify if something is amiss with reporting of click and impression tracking being reported via the network. (They should be close to the same).

You're obviously very new so I suggest you to do some marketing on your own pages and getting users to bookmark them instead of going directly to a merchant. If you're good on SE like you say, you'll see how your marketing performs, how parasites will steal your sales and you'll have time to become familiar with the basics of this business - it ain't an easy life pal and if you think you're going to get rich quick by putting up a link and paying advertising on it - you have more than a few surprises coming your way.

Forget Pay per click advertising with adwords or anybody else at this point. Thats the best advice I can give you.

quote:
2) How do you code the actual tracking link in AdWords? I'm confused by the two tracking URLs, one in an <A> tag and one in an <IMG> tag, that came with the approval email. One isn't enough?

If I recall correctly, AdWords doesn't allow the use of the <IMG> tag, you can only put the appropriate link tag. Also, since you're an affiliate, you have to indicate that on the second line of the AdWords text.

I'm not sure if you'll find AdWords profitable. For fun, I looked at doing some AdWords affiliate links for the Disney Store. Using our own "conversion" rates. Turned out to make up the money I'd have invested in AdWords, I'd have to have generated $20,000 in sales, which based upon the conversion rates, wasn't very probable. Of course, that was based upon $0.60 cpc or there abouts.

Thanks so much for the responses. That's very helpful to me.

happypoon, No, I don't expect to get rich, but it would be nice to make a buck. I figure for $25 to $50 in AdWords, I can check it the idea.

In a previous life I had a Christmas gift company, no affiliates though. I actually, made the gifts and shipped them out myself. (It seems primitive, now.) So, I'm guessing that I can find a few cheap keywords. Not a lot of clicks but cheap ones.

What the heck, it's an experiment.

    Thanks again.
