I want to start giving ppc a try, however with the cju forums gone, most of the references and info have gone as well..

Anyone who can offer info on which ppc's to try, expected conversion rates (range), minimum return on a product I would be looking for (eg. only sell products which return $10 commission and above etc..). In regards to PPC, I am a complete newbie, so any help is appreciated..

Here's some PPC tips...

>Anyone who can offer info on which ppc's to try,

FindWhat. If you have a really high commission item (say $20-$25 to be on the safe side), OverSure can be a good bet if you can stand the BS it takes to get in there.

>expected conversion rates (range)

That'd be 1-4% on average. Keep in mind that some dogs can't convert to save their necks! Be watchful for that 0% CR merchant that occasionally sneaks in.

>minimum return on a product I would be looking for (eg. only sell products which return $10 commission and above etc..).

That depends on what you bid!!! If you bid 1c, you may be able to get away with commissions like $5. If you bid 5c, go for the $20-$25 and up ones. If you have some REALLY hot-hot converters (I mean like 50% CR), you can put them on for a couple of cents even if they only pay $2. But these profitable $2 ones are darned rare--it's best to be sure of the CR of low-ticket ones like those before bidding anything.

The figures aren't just based on the amount of return expected for a particular product. To make a profit, you also have to leave enough margin to cover any DUDS you accidentally promote! So make it a FAAAATTT margin, so even if you promote a few duds, you still have enough change left at the end of the month to make it all worthwhile.

Since you're a newbie, pay closer attention to the CR. It's hard to tell within a week, but within 3, you ought to be able to see who's going to convert or not.

If you find some products just don't get clicked, you don't have to rip 'em down so fast (it only costs you if a listing draws clicks)... certain products just get clicked every once in a blue moon. The ones that are dangerous are the ones that bring in surprisingly heavy amounts of traffic (racking up the bill)--and don't convert worth beans.

And watch out for that #1 listing. On a PPC engine, it's poison. Those dud clicks look a lot uglier when you're paying for them!

A qualified "good luck" (are you promoting the same thing I am??? If you are, that's why it's a "qualified" good luck, LOL!)...

Thanks all.. between the advice here and the article (which came in handy) I think I have enough to go on.. I certainly picked up a few things I would have done incorrectly..

Hehe.. As a ppc newbie, you'll find me as far away as possible from anywhere there is serious competition.. After that though, I'm gonna hit up that site of yours and bid 1c above every listing you have .. BTW, that is a joke in case you were wondering.. It makes me wonder though.. How many people have tried that since your site was exposed publicly? Have you ran into any extra competition?

Yah, I made a page for every product Leader has and bid exactly over her and used even the same ad copy in the ppc ad (not!).

But you see, I have this problem, I can't write ad copy like Leader (say, will you get that e-book written already??), so I had to figure out how to get my pages to draw the visitors on to the merchant in my own style.

I still feel like a newbie in the ppcs, and have found that I feel much better bidding way low. Of course, I haven't found the merchant with a great CR yet, except Amazon where I am stuck with the 5% commish.

GoPile just got rid of their .001 pricing structure, so now I don't see too many advantages of their engine over FindWhat until they get their own traffic up.

Well, I have to admit that I don't do much checking of the bids at OverSure/FindWhat--I decide what I'm going to bid and forget it! I bid low enough (5c or [at FW] less) that there really isn't any point to looking unless I notice a SEVERE drop-off.

Actually, most of the ones who were motivated to copy had done it already. Those people had just seen my listings at OverSure and FindWhat and decided to try the same thing, I guess, since there was no association with me at the time.

These typically find out much to their chagrin, that I usually leave dud merchants on the site...solely as Land Mine Merchants! For some reason, copycats seem to magnet right onto them. It's always funny to see some site bidding $1 on some dud-bucket that I know will get a zillion clicks and 0% CR!!! (But copycats don't know that until they bid the buck! And by then it's too late, ha ha ha!)

Oh is that why it didn't work?

Gee, I thought those pink french fuzzy toaster covers would sell like hot cakes, so I bid on them $2 at GoTO, even though the commish is $2.50. You sneek, you! I lost a couple shirts over that one! (At least hubby was amused  )

Just kidding, but do get the ebook out on writing ad copy, huh, will ya, huh, huh?

Does anyone else have any suggestions on which pay per clicks besides, Goto, Findwhat, Ah-ha. I remember reading that some allow incentive clicking. Elisabeth, do you know which ones.

Haiko, how do you make out with Kanoodle?

I have had success with FindWhat, Kanoodle, and 7Search. I have stayed away from Overture, given what people have said about their attitude towards affiliate sites. But I do plan to advertise with Overture once I get my meta search engine running.

Kanoodle is the one that allows incentivised traffic AS AN OPTION. I plan to waste $25.00 with incentivized traffic at 1 penny per click with a separate Kanoodle account. I hope to estimate whether incentivized traffic will "convert" into something as simple as making a search with my meta search engine. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is making sales, but as a "brand builder" for a free general-interest service such as my own, it might work.

I also plan to try Google's AdWords with my meta search engine. I have submitted my meta search engine to Inktomi paid, and I plan to submit my meta search engine to AltaVista paid.

So in a couple months, I plan to report back on my experiences with Overture, incentivized Kanoodle, Google's AdWords, Inktomi's paid submission, and AltaVista's paid submission. And I will also place the article on my webmaster web site:
http://www.htmlgoody.com/

In the meantime, I have a word of advice: stay away from pointcom.com! Their traffic totally sucks. Generally stay away from a pay-per-click search engine that doesn't have search partners. I've had success (i.e. traffic) with search engines with search partners.

Haiko and Peter, Thanks for the feedback. I might give kanoodle and 7search a try and see if they can produce a better quality of traffic than I think I have been receiving from goto. <IMG src=http://www.abestweb.com/ubb/icons/icon7.gif>

Search Cactus is the main incentivized search engine that I know about. They are partnering with Kanoodle (and Espotting too, I think), thus the option that Peter Kirby mentioned. They also may be partnered with 7Search - I suspect that from some activity I've seen in logs, but I haven't taken the time to confirm it one way or the other.

I think Peter's idea of testing incentivized searches with a different account is a good one. Ultimately the only way to find out what works well (or not) is to try it and see.

Another suggestion: stay away from hootingowl.com. I haven't used it myself, but it is fairly obvious that it is just a scam in the hope to make a quick buck off webmasters and webmistresses putting down the $100 to open an account!

I also don't like searchgalore.com because of the way that they try to screw their affiliates out of commissions by offering a bonus for phone orders.

7search and Kanoodle both have "non-relevant" listing options. So do pay attention when clicking on your add keywords in 7search. I just renewed my account at 7search.

Also had an email recently from a new ppc who didn't separate adult listings in the results. They were also offering that 500% bonus like BrainDead does...maybe it's a symptom of an ill ppc to offer such a high bonus upon opening an account.
