Just read that Google is going to let surfers vote on whether the pages they pull up in a search are good or bad and Google will be using the information to review sites. Also they may start letting surfers rank pages. Doesn't sound good...

Here is one of the articles http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1005-200-7986789.html The other one is at http://searchenginewatch.com, but since I'm not a member, I can't get in to give you the address. This heads up came in their email to me. Maybe someone else has the web address of the article?

Why does this sound bad to you? I would think that would be a great thing.

I'd love my ranking to increase because people like my site. Having to dink with link popularity sucks. Why should I have to link with sites that are basically competition with me?

People like my site a large percentagage of my traffic comes from bookmarks and I am sure if they could rate my site I would do even better.

Well that's my <IMG src=http://www.abestweb.com/ubb/icons/icon26.gif>

I only think it might be bad because it could take the ranking system Google has now, based on objective mathematical formulas, and place it in the hands of subjective surfers, such as your competition, who could vote against your site a zillion times and conceivably lower your rankings.

Sounds good to me, it would flush out sites that have nothing to do with what the surfer was looking for. It would also make sites that are worth looking at and provide the information a surfer is looking for easier to find.

it sounds exactly the same as the current googlebar pagerank thingy, i dont have a google toolbar but from what i understand, in advanced mode it has this feature for determening pagerank and you turn it off by returning to basic mode, it sounds just like that

i just hope that we dont see big traffic sites like msn at the top of the search results all the time since they will probably get the most votes

quote from the cnn site
"It will most likely have more of an aggregate impact," Krane said. "We have indexed more than 1.6 billion Web pages, so it is extremely inefficient to go after individual pages."

Problem with user-rankings is the possibility (probability) of abuse. Let's say you are competing in the same space as another merchant, both getting good rankings etc. All that merchant needs to do is give you a load of bad reviews and themselves a load of good ones. Cookies and IP logging don't rally matter a damn if you know what you're doing.

Excellent Points - I can feel both sides. However, I think that I like it just the way it is. Certain people may or may not like your site - then your ass out of luck. Also, I don't think that would work for totally ranking the sites like that. The average user is not gonna bother to rank your site one way or the other. Who has time for all that.

Jadakiss: You should try competing for traffic in some of the places I do! User ratings can be a nasty business.

On the other hand, I sometimes get some really great feedback <sigh> I dunno.. I guess I'm just a cynical bugger!

Haiko,

Can you write a script that will give us all good rankings (votes) on google and give all non ABW competition bad rankings?

Haiko,

I figured if there was a way, you would be able to figure it out in your "spare time".

Ofcousre we would need to be careful that we don't get "banned" from google by using such a tool.

I'm not worried about it. All my visitors LOVE my site. They even write me fan mail!

Whoops! What am I saying?? What if some anti-Pagan religious people wanted to vote down all the Pagan sites?? How could we protect ourselves from abuse?

This could be a big problem for any site the is at all controversal. There could be some first amendment problems here. If minority sites become the objects of abuse, litigation is sure to follow.

Haiko, write that script and head this off at the pass!!
