Which Forums Software is the Best?

vBulletin
UBB
FuseTalk

I'm evaluating all of them, and they all look pretty good.

Any thoughts?

Even though it's not on your list, have you thought about Ikonboard?

DealCut,

Depends on how many users you plan on having and your server capabilities ... If you elaborate more I'll be happy to advise.

BTW - IKONBOARD is the "best" free one, I'd start there

Haiko...if you don't mind me asking, was there a particular reason you stopped using Ikonboard...I didn't know if it were your preference or if there was an issue with Ikonboard...

Tom,

We switched because of the ease of use (familiar interface) for CJU members. I also liked that there are 1,000's of hacks available for the UBB to really tweak it.

The new SQL version of Ikonboard does like very, very nice indeed. But for hacks you just CANNOT beat vbulletin.....

Ikonboard being free is amazing....

I have over 4,000 newletter members and I get around 15K Unique users per month with an average of 135K page views per month.

I'm not really sure how many users will be on the forums, maybe 40 concurrent users.

My Host (Burlee.com) supports ColdFusion, Win2k Server, Linux, and offers MySQL, MS SQL-Server and MS Access Databases.

Dealcut,

I'd say Vbulletin ... best offering for the price.

I always advise that if your forum is new start-up use a free forum system. It seems like for every new forum that starts-up only 1 in 10 is a success. There are already quite a few deals forums out there (I have one myself) and the key issue you should focus on is how to attract members and how to get them to participate. If your forum doesn’t make it that would just be money down the drain.

Based on your numbers above I would say you would have to be very lucky to average 40 concurrent users. It is much easier to get people to sign-up for an opt- in newsletter than it is to get forum members. I would bet for every 100 new sign-ups to my double opt-in newsletter I am lucky to get 5 new forum members. If you do get 40 concurrent users on average you are probably going to need a dedicated server with vb or UBB.

If you want to do the forum just to increase revenues I would advise against it. What you will find if your forum is successful in terms of activity and members is that your costs will grow rapidly and your revenues won’t keep pace.

Another free suggestion: YaBB. This is a board that I actually got set up and working (that tells you it's not difficult to use ) and it is free. There is also a fairly large community doing hacks for it so it is customizable. I took my board down after I realized I wasn't going to get any real traffic to it, but there are a few about to check out.

Here's the page the main forum page: http://www.yabbforum.com

And here's the hacks page: http://boardmod.yabbforum.com

It's been awhile since I'd visited and apparently they just moved to the new yabbforum.com address.
