I read somewhere that Alexa is a good tool for ranking and sizing up the competition. In their privacy policy they mention that they track activity at Amazon.com by name.

Is it safe to download their software, or is it a scumware hazard?

pretty sure alexa has nothing to do with scumware. I never downloaded anything from them though; I just use their stats on the homepage.

I use alexa and I don't consider it to be scumware.

First you are made aware of what alexa does right from the start and second they do not mess with the displayed webpage instead they only use their portion of the browser toolbar.

They do offer "related links", a search service, and an amazon.com shopping link but none of these are forced upon the user just there to use if you want to.

Scumware in my definition is software that scans and changes pages to steal traffic from the rightfull owner.

I think it's all the same technology. Just like a gun can be good in the right hands and bad in the wrong.

Thanks for your replies. I didn't think they were. I used to use them but when I ran that scumware program check on my old computer, they were listed. Then when I got my new computer I never downloaded again. Mainly because the last version I used didn't show page rankings. >100,000 isn't exactly the information I was looking for.

I noticed when I visited their site that they have a new version out, that does include page rankings again, and just wanted to be sure before I downloaded the software again.

Alexa has some privacy implications, and programs like AdAware scan for it.

However, it's a useful tool, and it should help your Alexa page rank if you use it yourself. The only reason I don't use it is that I have the Google toolbar up, and I don't really want to use up any more real estate on another toolbar!

My raw log files keep showing up Alexa-like IP addresses, does that mean Alexa will be including my site as a "related link" for free? I know, fat chance.

Or does that mean users with Alexa installed have visited my site?

    Cheers,
