Should I build my links pages manually or use software? Any recommendations? I've seen a few packages but have no idea if they are worth buying..

Go manual, it may take up more time but you can't beat the price.

If you are looking at zoooos, I will just add my personal reaction:
When someone sends me a letter that they saw my site, liked it, blah, blah, blah, and I see the link is structured such that it was built by Zeus, I most often don't even look or write back. Occasionally I'll look at the page, most often to write back, "congratualations on making a zeuss directory,now take out the link to my site."

I'd agree with webmistress, whenever I get an obviously software generated email it gets dumped immediately.
Manual requests on the other hand have got me some links from very prestigious sites that would have immediately dumped any software generated email request. Assuming of course that they don't filter it out anyway without even looking at it.
