Report on my experience with EasySiteHits, 3,000 "targeted" visitors for $39.95

SUMMARY
3,000 visitors delivered, responsive to email queries, very limited click-throughs, NO SALES.

WHAT I PROMOTED
To test EasySiteHits, I selected a page on my site that I felt matched one of the categories they list. It had a list of products (all one merchant) that while greatly varied, all fell into one larger category (e.g., listing where to buy 100 different colors of widgets in a world where some people buy every blue widget they can find and others buy every green widget, but the people who buy blue widgets never buy green and vice versa).

The page included direct links to the merchants sales page for each item.

I felt it had good variety, but was themed enough to attract attention from a general group (and the page design was one that the merchant has assured me sells).

I also chose this particular page because it was brand spanking new, not in the search engines, and it lists products I wasn't previously selling -- all making it easier to track EasySiteHits activity. Any Sales coming from these products would be attributed to EasySiteHits traffic.

In addition, the products were very moderately priced (or CHEAP) and make for good impulse buys (or so I thought, lol).

MERCHANT HISTORY
I have used the featured merchant for another product line (think of it as a color of widget that wasn't included on the page promoted ). With highly targeted surfers (PPC), they convert at about 1 in 76 and with targeted-but-general-SE traffic, they convert at about 1 in 185.

PROMISED/DELIVERED TRAFFIC
EasySiteHits promised 3,000 visitors and near as I can tell (making allowances for the fuzziness of log files and server tracking), that's what they sent. I don't get the exact number that they said I received (slightly over 3,000), but the numbers are close enough that I don't think there is any skull-duggery going on.

They did NOT, however, deliver 1,000 visits per day as described in their promotional material. It took 14 days to have those 3,000 visitors delivered.

CLICK-THROUGHS
For the 14 days prior to the campaign, my traffic to this merchant averaged 303 visitors per day. For the 14 days of this campaign, my traffic to this merchant averaged 298 visitors per day.

I had expected a significant increase...

Beyond tracking daily visitors prior-to and during, I am not at all sure how many click-throughs there were. I did not set up anything to track the click-throughs of that page.

However, I did note that the promoted page registered www.linkcounter.com as a referer (72 hits) -- and that is the only page on my site that listed them.

I suspect, but have not verified, that this is some means for EasySiteHits to track clicks of sites being promoted. Again, I have NO VERIFICATION, but I suspect that I had about 72 click-throughs.

SALES
I requested that the merchant provide me with a list of all products sold via my site during the campaign (information not generally available), which they provided.

Remember, I wasn't selling the promoted products anywhere else -- so all sales in this one line would go to EasySiteHits.

Not one single sale from the page promoted via EasySiteHits.

And there ya have it.

I have to claim some responsibility in this failed experiment. I strongly suspected (from the list of available categories) that the traffic wasn't targeted enough to be good for sales.

But hey, I'll try anything... once.

Great report Cedric!

It's too bad this guy made even a dime off our testing. I guess we now know that we have a good reliable group here that will report results of tests. That's great! Hopefully some folks were saved the $40-$100 testing out this non-performer.

Well, I don't feel badly about his making a dime (or two ) -- he has a product, he delivered it (albeit more slowly than promised), he should be paid -- he never promised sales.

And I'm not completely convinced that there aren't some sites that wouldn't benefit from this type of promotion -- content sites, freebie offers, maybe others.

I'm not saying that it would have a positive ROI for any of these sites, just that I haven't been convinced that it wouldn't.

Anyway, as far as advertising experiments go, it's a fairly cheap one.

great post cedric

just for the sake of completeness i feel that someone should point out that there was a flaw in your testing in that you chose a product that you didnt have proven sales with and just because the merchant can convert doesnt mean that this product does, im speaking from 'sperience

not trying to put a damper on your efforts though, great unbiased report, i certainly appreciate the time and work that youve put in

do you have an account with linkcounter.com to track your clicks or do you mean that they appeared in your stats as a referer?

do you have any comments about referers? did any appear in your logs? are you satisfied that real humans visited your site and not a robot?

However, if they don't convert via PPC over the next month, I'll absolutely come back and revise my statements. As to the bots question... I'm not sure how to answer that. I have no real reason to believe that bots were used, but no real reason to believe that they weren't. I do think if bots were used, they would have done a better job in delivering the traffic in the specified amount of time.

Gut Instinct? No bots.

@JadaKiss -- exactly which part is unbelievable?
