    Hi there,
a quick review of my paid inclusion $39.00 via Inktomi.
Did submit at 28 Feb. (actually i did submit at 27 Feb. but the control panel (via Ineedhits) showed 28 Feb. Finally today (6 March) my control panel showed "included" instead of "Queued".
    Now the funny thing commes.
My control panel is giving 2 March as the date that it was included in their database. (instead of 6 March).
So they can turn the clock back.....
Did a quick search, via position tech ( i heard this URL gives a straight database search of Inktomi)http://169.207.238.189/search/
but could not find my site in any good position other than positions i knew from before the Search-submit.
Now my control panel has a keyword report, so i thought if i click on my own URL via the PositionTech search, i should see the keywords i used. But my control panel did not show-up my keyword i tried. (or any other...)
So my point is, is Inktomi sleeping.... and just fake a bit the dates to make people happy...?
Does anyone know how to check a searchengine update. and is there any other option for searching the Inktomi database...?
    Thanx,
    Pete

Its an inclusion program, not a positioning program. I've been using positiontech. Results are good and I've been using their list of my urls to find out which keywords I have been found on and which I can improve my position on.

Via positiontech it can take several days for any particular search you were found on to show in the results.

Submitting to Ink cannot improve the position of any url it was already aware of. You can only make it aware of urls it didn't know about.

    Thanks for comment Icicle,
While the site was already listed i did optimize the keywords title and description, but no higher ranking at all....
Okey i found (i think) a way to find out if a site is listed and an easy way to find out what other sites are paying Inktomi, on a search
    try this:
Do a search with (position tech) http://169.207.238.189/search/
Fade with your mouse over the URL's you find.
If, at your bottom bar the URL is indicated as: (http://redirect-west.inktomi.com/cli...u=http://www.y oursite.com/) than
probably the site has a 39$ paid inclusion in the database of Inktomi. (iam not sure about this, but it looks like....)

    comments welcome!
    Peter

We submitted to Inktomi about a month ago and weren't having much luck with rankings. Then we finally got it figured out and are now coming up in the top 10 on certain keywords. Just takes a little tinkering. New urls also show up in the engines (MSN, Hotbot) at least a day before PositionTech says they have. It's a HUGE relief not to be totally Google-dependent.

No big shock. My log files typically show from 2x-5x the hits that show in the control panel report. INeedHits admits that their hit tracker only catches a small portion of actual traffic.

I would say to check your log files or use a tracking service (where you put their hit tracking code on your site) to get the real picture.

It also takes a few days for any changes you make to the included pages to show up as a ranking change--and paying in itself won't change your ranking, it just makes sure you get included. Rumors to the contrary that I have seen on other boards are false.

As for the March 2nd vs. March 6th thing, I've seen that occasionally but I'm not going to bother worrying about a 4 day difference. The important thing--the delivery of hits--can be tracked without using their system.

    Here's a question...

I've been adding about five pages a night to one of the sites I paid to include. Does that paid inclusion cover the crawling and indexing of all of my pages or do I have to pay to include each page? Each new page has its own set of keywords and phrases.

Your Inktomi submission only covers the page(s) you have paid for -- nothing else. You can see which pages are included at Position Tech under the "URL Listing" click-through. As you add new pages to your site, you'll have to decide if it is cost effective to pay for them to be added to Inktomi.

One suggestion -- pay for a certain number of additional pages and then monitor the results after you add them. Some pages will do well in traffic, some will not. Tinker with your keywords and try your best to get each of them into one of the top listings on Inktomi and its member search engines. Then, when you've finished that, sort out the pages that will never make a top listing and replace them with some of the pages you don't have listed yet. You do that by clicking on the "E" on the right side of your page listing on your URL Position Tech page, and then substituting the new page's URL on the next screen that pops up. Then monitor the new pages, etc. You can freely substitute as many pages as you want within the 12 months that you are paying for, as long as they are in the same domain.

If you're willing to spend some time with this, you'll find that none of the pages you are paying for are duds, and your money is well spent.

    Advisory from Position Tech:

03/11/02. Network Timeout Errors. We started seeing an abnormally high number of URLs displaying Network Timeout errors on the 8th. We reported this issue to Inktomi and upon further investigation it appears that a high percentage of the URLs displaying errors are being hosted on rackspace or behind rackspace's firewall. If your website is hosted on rackspace or behind rackspace's firewall we recommend you contact rackspace as they are blocking Inktomi's spiders.

Never paid a search engine to be submitted and I get alot of hits from inktomi. I think the main reason I get indexed for free is my host.
