Anyone that has a listing at looksmart should avoid updating to their new pay per click service as long as possible.

They state that... "To receive your $$$ in free clicks per listing, you must activate your new LookSmart account before July 11, 2002."

I updated my account and over night used up all the so called free clicks that they mention without even choosing any keywords yet. I received an email from Looksmart this morning that states that my account has been suspended and they require an estimated $1,800.00 deposit to keep it active!

If you can hold off on updating until July then you may be able to get free traffic until then. Looksmart now has a new linking sytsem so that instead of say msn.com linking directly to your site, it is a link to looksmart, that redirects traffic to your site much the same as cj.com uses with their http://www.qksrv.net links.

I now have to pay many thousands per month just to stay in the msn listings with this new service. Their service charges a flat rate of $0.15 per click for every partner site so this can be a really expensive way to keep your msn.com traffic.

I would really avoid their new service unless you are willing to pay big bucks for a listing.

On another message board I visit someone was complaining that he was switched to their PPC program without his permission.

LookSmart is clearly not holding itself to very high ethical standards as they change their business model.

You don't have to do anything to deplete your LS account - if you got their emails about the automatic switchover, then you are already expending clicks. I have done nothing on LS for a couple of months and I just got email that two of my accounts are depleted/suspended until next month (each account used up the 100 "free" clicks LS has so generously awarded sites submitted under the old directory system).

I take it this is only for the paid looksmart listings that the ppc is coming into effect for? Or is it?

Not to rain on the Looksmart Parade, but ...

1. one of their major Traffic sources is Ezula (Major league ParasiteWare&#8482 - which means that many of the visiotors will have it installed so you'll just lose any chance to convert your traffic!
    2. Merchants get preferance ... since Feb of this year Looksmart has been changing static merchant $199 listings to double dipped listings (affiliate links) - what does this mean? They change the ranking algorith for double dipped merchants to be much higher for the categories / keyowords
    3. Looksmart is one of the top Duper affiliates there are!
    4. and most importantly --- show me a REAL keyword on Looksmart where an Affiliate is listed above a merchant!
KNOW WHAT YOUR GETTING INTO, BEFORE YOU COMPLETELY WASTE YOUR $$$$!

    Continued Success,

    Haiko

    grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrroooooooooooooaaaannnnn.
I never even looked at that email. I remember when they sent out the "upgrade your listing" stuff, logged in and laughed at the prices.

Good part is, the listing is the content site from about two years ago. No money lost if traffic drops off from msn.com to that site.
