The traffic reporting was improved a few weeks ago, but it still can be cheated and manipulated by someone who understands cookies.

But they're good as a rule of thumb about how well a site is doing.. I think the advice from other ABW members last time it was discussed was not to make any kind of financial commitment on the Alexa ranking alone.

I have clients that have told me their web traffic is X.
And I find that their statements are exceptional numbers.

When I research thier listings in search engines and or review their traffic rating at Alexa and compare to my stats and rating, I push back from my computer and wonder if I'm missing something or being lied to.

I'm shocked

I don't know about any recent changes, but I can tell you in the past (with my own high traffic site, so I know I wasn't cheating any numbers ) that Alexa is (was?) unreliable at the best of times.

Absolutely NO WAY I would base any business decisions on Alexa numbers.

Oh, and if they're your clients and web stats are important, ask for their log files -- that's the ONLY way to be sure.

Basically, Alexa works on machines with the Alexa Toolbar installed, this reports back visited sites to Alexa which compiles the number of visits per site. There's coding to ensure that only one visit is counted (before it was every page view) - this is explained on the Alexa site.

Because the number of people with Alexa installed is quite small, there's a wide margin for error. On the old version (i.e up to a few weeks ago) it was very easy to fix the figures by repeatedly reloading pages, now it's a little more difficult. As I said, it's explained pretty well on the Alexa site.

OK, it's a bit inaccurate, but if their site is rank 1 million or so they're not pulling much traffic. If they're 10,000 or so they are.

The other issue would be their demographics. I don't think younger tech savvy users are using the alexa toolbar.

Alexa doesn't tell you anything and here is why.

Nobody uses it except webmasters. If a person wants a toolbar they will use the google bar because it is much less intrusive and doesn't seem to slow down your surfing experience. The alexa bar reloads itself after a page is brought up and does all kinds of crap before it is finally done.

Also, who has ever heard of alexa? Regular people have never heard of it.

Alexa suckered us into thinking it was something that it has never been nor will ever be other than just a good marketing scheme.

I've used the Alexa Toolbar in the past and it's got some interesting features, but the Google Toolbar is a lot better and I refuse to run two.

Alexa explains it here and they even admit that the demographics aren't perfect.

Does anyone actually have figures for visitors with the Alexa toolbar?
