Does anybody besides me really care about Alta Vista rankings.

I guess it's the rebel in me but I don't think they are worth the effort.
The paid inclusion through "infospider" to me wasn't worth the investment I made last year.
    Any comments?

No, i get a hit here and there. Google is taking over. Then after them maybe Lycos, Alltheweb(FAST). Teoma was supposed to be the next big thing, but i havent heard anything from them lately. Googles paid listings will also start showing in Ask Jeeves in the near future. I just like to concentrate on Google-(AOL, Yahoo secondary, Iwon, ISPs such as Earthlink, ATT, Netscape.com, Ask Jeeves paid listings in future etc.

    Thanks johnniebry,
I am on the same track you talked about.
I was concerned that I was missing out.
I hope to get some more input.

    I did see 14 visits from trek23.sv.av.com
IP address. It came today after I posted the message.
Haven't seen anything like that in the past months.

AV's financial position is rumored to be very uncertain.. I'm not even sure how long they can keep going. Traffic is dropping away from them, and their recent improvements are probably too late.

I've noticed that pages that are good for Google are often good for AV too though.

It's genuinely sad the way things have gone for AV. They used to be the search engine which I'd concentrate on getting rankings for but now the amount of traffic from them is more of a tiny drop than a trickle. If they do die like Excite did, I'll genuinely mourn their loss.

Alta Vista is dying a slow death ...

Here is an older thread where this was discussed.

    Thanks Everyone!
It is sad about AV I agree and the old thread "dhelle" dug up was great to review.

Even so it proves that poor service does not payoff.

Their offer at 50% off through "infospider" doesan't have much value.

Once again Thanks for the info.

I have actually started getting regular trawls of my site from AV and some traffic that I am not going to sneeze at. Yes Google, AOL and MSN make up most of my searches, but AV is starting to make an impact too. Two months ago I was lucky to see an AV hit in my logs despite being placed in the top 5 for many keywords. Now is very different. I wish them luck and hope they survive.

I wouldn't give up on Altavista yet. While it's not a huge sales driver it is our most cost effective search engine...outside of google of course.

It makes us money every day.

It makes me money too. But I'd make more if I charged its spider 1c per click.

    Hi
Well I am getting a couple of people visitng the site each day via Alta Vista. Cant really complain about it as any visitors to the site are good, especially with my product as it means they are searching for it in my City.
    regards John

I just checked AV--my sites are actually IN there, finally! And with decent ranks! <IMG src=http://www.abestweb.com/ubb/icons/icon38.gif>

A quick check of the log files shows a few hits coming from there, too.

As for "really caring" about AltaVista rankings, I'm not going to be concerned about it. Either they like my sites or not, just like always [shrugs]. I'll do the optimization for bigger SEs, as always, and just be glad when that happens to please some extra engines along the way.
