I didn't know this until a moment ago when checking server logs on a new site.
I had a large site with thousands of pages that I recently deleted off the server. I then customized the 404 to say please visit us at our new site located at www.mysite.com
To my suprise I see google followed the 404 to my new site.

Yup - they follow 302s as well, which is more interesting, I think as they can record them as coming from the original site. IE: If affiliate a) is linking to merchant b) via tracking system c) and tracking system c) uses a 302 to redirect to the merchant, then googlebot can follow this link to the merchant and will record it as a backward links as having come from affiliate a).
Interesting, don't ya think ?
