Well it appears that Looksmart has jumped onto the free deep-crawl bandwagon.

Any educated guesses as to whether this may pose a threat to Inktomi listings in the near future? (this question *sort of* directed at MarkyMark )

    Deelz,

Looksmart are a directory - they don't have a spider. But I am intrigued. Can you post your logfile reference to this or something similar. They have bought Wisenut, but I saw that a couple of weeks ago still going by the name wisenutbot.

    Here it be:

    Mozilla/4.0 compatible ZyBorg/1.0 (wn.zyborg@looksmart.net; http://www.WISEnutbot.com)

Yeah, Zyborg - that's the one. This is Wisenut's spider. Wisenut are now owned by Looksmart. This spider has been crawling a lot recently - it may mean that Looksmart are finally going to do something with it. If so, Wisenut will likely provide back up results in the Looksmart directory and their partners instead of Inktomi.

Wisenut ranks pretty much like Google, in case you were wondering - more emphasis on on-page factors rather than link pop/PageRank type things.

She's going deep on me too...

    209.249.67.108.looksmart.net - - [08/Sep/2002:06:09:18 -0400] "GET /deep/deeper/urls.html HTTP/1.1" 200 19669 "-" "Mozilla/4.0 compatible ZyBorg/1.0 (wn.zyborg@looksmart.net; http://www.WISEnutbot.com)"

    Thanks for the clarification..

Not only is it going deep, its going far and wide.

Hitting some friend's sites that just got put up in the past week. I hope they each buy me a coffee for linking to them to invite the spiders.

Sure hope this will be a good thing. The prospect of losing the Inktomi quick injections into the MSN listings is pretty scary.

This has nothing to do with MSN. MSN and Inktomi have a separate partnership from the one MSN and Looksmart has. When I was referring to Looksmart's partners, I meant those that took the whole Looksmart package. Like, uh.......I was going to give an example here, but I can't think of a single one !
