This is causing a lot of interest over at the search engine forums and looks very, very promising. Kinda like the old Infoseek, with very quick inclusion (within minutes, most often). It isn't even in beta yet, and the algo needs some tweaking, but take a look at www.gigablast.com . With the combined might of several search engine forums and this forum, this could be the start of something.

Very cool and quick. I searched for my domain name right after I submitted the url it came up with 3 pages. I hit reload it came up with 10 pages, then I couldn't keep up with it while going to the next 10 results. It even crawled out into my other sites that are linked from the submitted domain.

Cool,
Brian

Very aggressive spider, isn't it. A little too aggressive as it steams through a site. They need to calm that down a little.

But I think this could be a winner, crap logos aside.

Wow ...

On the main page ... Hit the refresh button and look at the stats for full pages indexed.

Every 5 secs. - Hundreds

Aggressive ... Is mild

wow, indeed.

Bone to pick -- it lists cgi scripts -- not the html page housing something that accesses the script, but the actual script is treated like a link. The potential for abuse here, seems sizeable... am I wrong?

To see a sample, search on links.cfg

Cedric, that is a major flaw. I don't know when you submitted today, but I understand they are only now getting the spider to obey robots.txt, so that is part of that problem. All search engines are, of course, capable of spidering cgi scripts, but they filter these - but this is something that needs addressing quickly.

Still, as this is not even in beta yet, I think it is worth getting in on the ground floor. We desperately need competition for Google before they go paid inclusion and completely sew up the search engine market.

Just taken another quick look and the last five searches feature shows up a search for 'ecomcity'. Wonder who did that search ?

markymark, thanks for the verification that the cgi issue is a serious flaw. I rarely bother with robots.txt files, so I hope they get the filter on this fixed. Guess I should, in addition to hoping, get to work on robots.txt files. <BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR> I think it is worth getting in on the ground floor<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>Absolutely! I wish my ecomm site had been around as long as all my content sites -- they're in every directory and with a strong presence and I never paid a penny. I'm sure not going to miss an opportunity to get my ecomm site in a free list.

And I'm also for competition -- as it stands, if I lost my google listings, I'd be a hurtin' puppy. If I lost my google and inktomi listings, I'd be dead. The more competition in the SE world, the less chance of my early demise.

Yeah, Cedric, you should have a robots.txt if only to cut out a lot of the rubbish that calls itself a spider.
