Are there any disadvantages in using country code domains like .bz .ws .cc etc - as far as search engines go?

I have a .com.au site ranked at number #1 for its targeted terms on a number of search engines including google.. so in some ways no. There are other disadvantages however, and it can also effect rankings on search engines which offer regional portals.

I have to say that I haven't scientifically tested this, but I've used (in my case) .co.uk domains to build networks of related sites (as advocated by some) around a main site (which is typically a .com) - and it appears to work.

...and .co.uk domains are certainly cheaper than .com - which becomes significant as the numbers grow
