Many suffered a PR loss this last update. On the WMW Forums the consenes now is that it is the result of DMOZ PR being downgraded to a PR9. This makes sense to me since my sites are not in DMOZ and did not suffer any PR loss. I think that Googles downgrading of DMOZ is A MAJOR event that will eventually lead to the demise of the Open Directory Project and put Google even more in control of the web. The lack of upkeep in this directory has been appalling along with the obnoxious arrogance of the editors that remain.

Personally, I try not to read WebmasterWorld as the amount of rubbish talked there is staggering, but have they considered that the 4 or 5 days downtime suffered by Dmoz this month maybe responsible for it's PR9.

IE: Googlebot spends 4 or 5 days following links to Dmoz, which is down. Consequently, these links (and there are probably 1000s) don't appear in ODP backlinks, thus downgrading it to a PR9.

The idea that Google has deliberately downgraded Dmoz is unlikely. My explanation is far more in keeping with how PR works.

As for the attitude of the editors, well, uh, you might be right.

WebmasterWorld has been a source of really
good information for me. ABW also has its CRAP
problems and they are being worked on. All boards
have a few immature folk regretably and you just have to sift thru their b.s.

The PR drop has been commented on at the ODP too. Opinion is that a lot of inbounds were dropped at the last update.

My two cents worth is that the ODP is still the best way to get PageRank - and that those people who are most critical are the ones who can't get listed (mostly because they are affiliate-only sites).

Don't forget that every ODP listing gets used and reused dozens of times (if not hundreds).

Ah Dynamoz will be the perfect DMOZ with every ABWer's page on its own special category with a PR10
