Is it worth the time to ad a link to your site on them or is it a myth?

It seems that guestbook spamming is making a bit of a comeback. A few months back, Google ignored all guestbook links but that isn't the case now.

That said, I'm not sure how to answer your question. Guestbook links are getting counted in your backlinks but if the purpose of adding your site to guestbooks is to manipulate link popularity, you are spamming Google. I would expect to see Google hammer sites doing this fairly soon as there is some dreadful spam in the results as a consequence of guestbook links.

Actually the GoogleGuy at webmaster world made mention of this. If you're at a site and they have a guestbook, go ahead and leave a link to your site. But i wouldn't go on a guestbook signing spree. Most guestbook pages have low PageRank. Try to get links from a page with a high PageRank.
