I guess they realised that webmasters would influence the votes by downgrading competition while voting highly on their own sites. Would be mad

Interesting. Seems to me that they are going to try to use it as a means of checking the relevance of their own algo. I don't think general web surfers using the feature will understand the difference between this and 'voting' for a particular page, which is the reason I believe it won't work.

I don't see this as an effective mechanism for determining algo relevance. They already check results just before the dance to see if they are relevant to a human. I don't think this will help.

That article is over a year old, outdated. They would never do that for the simple reason of the "go to hell" issue they took care of. It would be to easy to manipulate the results.

Folks, the ranking has been available for some time.

I have and use the google toolbar regularly and it's great.

One of the options is a and a face for ranking the page...

if you want to download the google toolbar its fast and works great for searches. You can also optin to share your spare processor time and help fight diseases.

The first beneficiary of this effort is Folding@home, a non-profit research project at Stanford University that is trying to understand the structure of proteins so they can develop better treatments for a number of illnesses.

To download here's the toolbar url: http://toolbar.google.com

I would kind of go easy on ranking your own pages much... but once in a while cant hurt
