What's the best thing to do when exchanging a link?

Don't be mad at me for asking. I'm sure there is someone else just as interested to know and if there isn't then remember its Christmas and be nice.

I hear stuff others tell me but I always get the real answers here with this group.

    Happy Holidays!

Be sure to specify the word or phrase you want anchored as a link. Use relevant keywords or phrases.

Be consistent with the url: "www" or "no www"; either way is fine but make sure you do it the same way every time.

to save you time write a short but descriptive email template - bothing too long or you might lose the readers interest

When I go on a "Link Exchange Hunt" this is what
    I do and I usually get a 75% response (75% of the
    links requests get setup).

First I go to the Search Engine I want the links
to show up in for instance right now I have
very little links showing in HotBot on my sites.

Then in the Search Query I put in the Category
of my site and the words "add url" or "link
    exchange" or "reciprocal link"

So the Query for the category "Shopping" would be
    Shopping "add url".

The search returns should give Many different sites' "link pages"

I then check out the top listings sites and make
sure they have a good Google Ranking -- 4 or
    better.

Then I add the link to my site's link page, using
either their link exchange information or going
to their index page, doing a view source and using their description.

Next I email them with the following "canned"
email -- Subject: Reciprocal Link Exchange?
    <BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>Hello,

Would you like to exchange links?

I have added a link to your site at:

    http://www.my link page url.com

Let me know if you would like the listing
    changed in any way.

Please take a look at my site and if approved,
could you add it to your links page with
    the following information?

    URL: http://www.myurl.com
Title: Use a Good Linking/Keyword Title
    Descr: A very short description.

I would appreciate it if you would let me
know if you will return the link or not.

    Sincerely,
    me

    <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

    Hope this helps.

    Anne
