Will I be penalized by search engines if I have 2 domain names pointing to one site?
We have one site with one domain name but we want to change the domain name, but do not wan to loose the traffic from the old domain name.
How do we go about this without offending rules and regulations of search engines like Google, Inktomi and others

Are both sites the exact same with same content, etc..?

Or does the site only exist on one domain, and the server forwards all other domain names automatically?

If the latter, then you're fine.

I am confused and hoping you can explain a little more.

Is it better to have the new domain name servers pointing at the old site?

Or is it better to have two seperate sites all together?

How different does the content have to be?

If anyone has more info please share because i am clueless.

    Thanks

    Thanks a lot AffiliateMakeover.com
Actually, presently, the site has only one domain name, so i guess we will have to make the server forward the new domain name automatically.
But can I submit the new domain name o search engines?
It will have the same content as the old domain name

    I'll try to explain again.

There is absolutely no point in having two completely exact websites existing on different domains. In fact, it can hurt you on the SE's.

Pick one as your main and put all the actual files on it there. Do an auto-forward server level from all other domains to the first one.

Think about it, the content has to be different enough for Google and others to not match up. And if you don't make it different enough, what's the point?

    Girlie:

If a domain is forwarding automatically and has no physical page or content on it at all, I "believe" it's a complete waste of to submit a domain name because there's nothing there for the search engines to read.

I was always confused about this too. When i first started it was on a free host. I still have it because its gets some nice traffic so i dont want to mess with it. What about this example, will this get penalized

    Lets say i have a page http://justlearning.geocities.com

and i get a domain name but have it frame forward to the geocites page. In the frame forwarding, you can have meta tags. So i frame forward http://www.justlearning.com to the geocites page. Can i get another domain, lets say http://www.stilllearning.com and forward it to the same page and use different meta tags.
