At what point does google decide that a keyword has been overused?

I've seen the sites stuffed with keywords and ridiculous sentences that are keyword driven. I've also seen these sites on the first page too. I've heard this is bad and "spammy"

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks

I think 1024 characters is the limit for most SEs but we use FAR less.

Adam, I think you are talking about the meta keyword tag. Steveinid is talking about text on the page, I believe.

When I first started learning SEO, I kept reading that you should go for a keyword density of 4-7%. Frankly, I have no idea whether that holds true anymore as I don't pay any attention to keyword density whatsoever. I just look at what other sites are doing for a particular phrase, then try to do it better.

You can, however, have very high keyword densities in Google. It does work very well there.
