Umm, no. That geoshities page doesn't have a PR7. Thats just a guess PR, not true PR.

It's one of those times Google gets confused, but yes, it'll be guessing from the theoritcal PR of www.geocities.com that the page must also be important.

Drill down into the personal pages in the Open Directory and you'll find that Geocities sites are PRed just like any other

I'm really confused by Google PR.

Previously, my site had a google PR of 3/4 depending on the day I checked (I just look at the bar in the google toolbar for these numbers).

Since that time, I've gotten a few more backlinks (slowly, slowly I'm getting there). I had a surge in google traffic around st pats with a seasonal irish page i put up, actually had a few sales as well! Then i switched the seasonal page to easter and it dropped (in fact I still get some traffic looking for various irish products...). Anyways, no MAJOR changes and now my google PR says "0".

The kicker is though that I have more consistent google traffic now with a score of 0 than I did when I had a PR of 3/4. Typing in just the url phrase (without a .net after it) in the google search page lists my site 3rd for that phrase. The 2 others above me (one has the same domain name, just followed by .com rather than .net - unrelated site category) both have dmoz listings (which I don't).

In short - my google traffic gets better as my google pr drops. This event is coorelated with my site getting more copy and more backlinks. I think this is not supposed to be the case?

How seriously does everyone here take google PR? I've heard that its meant for entertainment purposes only? But everyone seems to obsess on it...

Google pr is nothing but a viral marketing tool by the big G. It works wonders when you think about it as people go to numerous forums everyday and talk about it. Maybe I should start a toolbar with nyfalcon rank

    Absolute zero seriousness.

The stuff in the toolbar belongs in my garden, not on the internet. After all, the garden IS where fertilizer belongs...

    Haha, fertilizer, I like that!

Its good to see that there's nothing to make any sense of with google PR on the toolbar (and I'm to understand google PR ratings in general?). I had a feeling, but since so many people talk about it I didn't want to dismiss it too easily. Thanks for the comments!

    On page Factors!
    Hi,

Its no crap. Google sees the content in the pages along with the traffic and the back-links a site possess.

One of my sites has Zero page rank with two back-links and is on the top ten of Google for my main keyword ( number one on Yahoo).Page rank means nothing and all the talk of back-links makes me think if they are also overated.

    Good advice.

You don't need an arbitrary number telling you how you rank. A few quick searches for your key phrases and a log of visitors will tell you that much more accurately.

PR, what's PR? I haven't paid attention to it in years. It is ashame people give Google so much power over them.

Since Google PR doesn't affect my sales, I don't really care what my PR is. Some internet advertising companies use Google PR for determining rates, but if you don't use them, who cares?

For one of my sites this is exactly what happened. PR drops, SERPs went to #1, increase in traffic, increased in earnings. So as lostdeviant said, it's good if you're selling adspace or links, but lots of website do that but they use rel=nofollow so you still don't get link juice. Better look at traffic stats to determine whether it's worth placing ad/links first.

Yup. PR has been around a while now... and back then it *was* even more of a joke. Even I had PR9 sites. That got very little traffic... I also had several PR6-7 that are now 3-4s.

PR may mean you get crawled more, but it doesn't guarantee you targeted traffic.

As stated above, build your sites for people not bots.

Yes! A lot of people who just want to get some targeted traffic sometimes care too much about PR. In my opinion it can only help you in some way to improve your rankings in Google search list, though it's not the only thing that Google considers while ranking the website. There are a lot of examples when the websites with smaller PR were even more popular than websites with PR5-6 and were in TOP10.
