I had targeted a keyword phrase yielding a 150k searches 5 months ago for my front page.
Under that phrase I never ranked in Google better than 73.

Right before this last indexing I changed my title and positioned keyword phrases within the title and meta description to a phrase that was more geographical targeted and yielding 30k searches. That phrase I ranked 58.

Well now in the 150k phrase I rank 17 and Google is giving me that ranking under my old title.
Under the 30k phrase I rank 43 with my new title and description.

The url is the same just different content being displayed.

What should I do and how fast should I do it?

I wouldn't do anything yet, right now it seems Google is showing a Feb/March index with freshbot listings. I would wait and let Google do whatever its doing, whatever its doing.

    Thank you Wayne,
I guess I'll just enjoy the additional traffic for awhile.

You know I have seen so many strange things in my log files the last few weeks.
I don't know about anyone else but last Thursday I saw googlebot examine practically all our graphic images all day long.

It's great to know I can come here read and learn from everyone and then get good sound advice when I ask for it.

    Thanks again.

    >> last Thursday I saw googlebot examine practically all our graphic images all day long.

That wasn't standard Gbot, that was the G ImageBot. If you check the RDNS of the bots IP, you should find that the source reports as "crawlxx" (where xx are numbers) for standard Gbot, and as "crawlerxx" for the imagebot (although I may have remembered these the wrong way round). Newer imagebots report in the UA too, which is more reliable.

Google Image Search traffic runs at about 10% of Google Web Search traffic for me, which I suppose is fairly standard

    Thank you TallTroll.
Next time I'll know when those imagebots show up again.

You know it's pretty tempting to put my old title back up.
Afterall it is a great search term that generates good traffic.

You guys really think they will pick it up again if it gets dropped when the index is completed?

Well the 150k search phrase has vanished.
And the 30k search phrase hasn't moved any.

I have found that I am getting a steady stream of visitors from many other search phrases. It seems to be relevent to geographical related searches.

Any more suggestions and or observations?

MSN has really picked up and Google is as steady as ever.

Hmmm, better indexing of deep pages, with more targetted, geographic phrases showing through here?

    >> MSN has really picked up

Are these similar phrases to the new G traffic? If so, it might reflect better Inktomi indexing of your site too
