    The main difficulty I see with that theory is that it isn't the way large corporations usually work.

    I have never known a large corporate modify their live system 'on the fly' like this, such a major change would normally be planned some time in advance and only moved from pre-live to live after full testing.

    To do what is suggested here would likely require a database change to add the extra field (or expand an exisitng one) and this could be done without changing the main code at all. Only once the database had been updated would it be necessary to change the code, and I find it difficult to believe that a change to 15,000 servers wouldn't be a scripted solution that would be fairly fast, particularly as Google are known for changing their algorithms on a regular basis.

    Personally I suspect a corrupted database that had to be rolled back to an earlier version.

    Yes, does make some sense, never understood why Google would but out an old index with some freshbot listings. Maybe should post over at WMW and see what they think.

    after further study I see that the author may have a bias against google. But, his explination sounds very plausible.
