At www.Google-Dance.com If I type in, for example, the web-site cablecontracting.com I will get a list of other sites. 17 to be exact. Now I type in Link: cablecontracting.com I am then given a list of only 3 sites. However, from the list of 17 I see that they have links to cablecontracting.com.
Why the 2 different lists when the bigger list is also backlinks?
Are they not backlinks? Do I have my terminology mixed up?

When you do the link:yoursite.com query, Google only reports links to you from pages that are above a certain Page Rank, believed to be about PR4. Google knows about "smaller" links as long as it has spidered the pages they're on, it just doesn't always report them.
For a more complete look at your backlinks, try the link: query at AllTheWeb. It will show a lot of links that Google doesn't.
