I just downloaded last months' access log file for my site (quite big to my Windows machine. It comes as a .com file (but as you know it contains only text).

My question is which software do you use/recommend for anaylzing log files? Not on the server, but the downloaded file on my machine.

Oh, yes, log file was downloaded as a GZ compressed file if that helps ...

    Thank you!

Analog if you have some command line experience. Its free, its competent

I really like the look of Urchin right now, especially with the UTM/ELF combo allowing you to measure metrics like sales by SE by k/word. Lots of detail. Don't know if you'd need to decompress first for Urchin (I think you can tell Analog to use GZ decompress on the fly)

    I agree with TallTroll.
    Urchin is Great!

They have really progressed from two years ago when I used them. I have been using them now for two months.
It has assisted me in making some targeted marketing moves.

We're using Web Trends to analyze our logs. Our IT probably wouldn't do a free endorsement for it, but it does seem to provide the information we need.

Hmmm, Urchin could be great, but $695 is a bit too much for my budget...

Any other suggestions (been using Analog before and don't really like it ... don't ask me why )?

I use HappyLog, by Axolot Data, they're at www.axolot.com .

It's try-before-buy, and only about $35 or so to register.

It's pretty simple-minded, but it does what I need.

You're a merchant, right ? Well, I've just been playing with the demo version of ClickTracks and it's pretty much the best log analyzer I've found. You can 'tag' particular visitors by criteria and track their path through the site, so you can see, for instance, the number of purchases made by AdWords visitors who click on the search term 'affiliate software'. You can then run comparisons with the number of Overture visitors who buy from the same initial search and adapt your ad campaigns accordingly.

You can also run comparisons between your PPC campaigns and visitors coming from organic listings to determine the value of real SEO vs PPC for your site.

You can even find out if, for some unknown reason, your AltaVista visitors covert at three times the rate of your MSN visitors - which is something I discovered when I was using it. Now all I need to do is figure out how to get more AltaVista traffic and I'll be sorted !

    It's only $495 - there's a fully functional demo here: www.clicktracks.com .
