I know that if I ask how do you get 1 million uniques I'm opening a whole can of worms because for some of us if we knew we wouldn't be asking for site reviews etc.

Others who may already get that kind of traffic probably guard their secrets to success with all they have but I will go ahead and ask.

How do you get one million monthly unique visitors to a website?

What types of services do you need to provide and how much advertising do you need to do?

This is a call to fess up for all that do and the rest of us could learn from you. If you dare

offer xxx passwords.
Although this is mostly the "something for nothing" crowd that will make up your million.

As for a serious answer: i dunno. I'm still trying myself. I'd be happy with 100,000.

Als, what time period do you want these hits over.. a year?

I'm about to start hosting one of my mates sites, & he gets about 3000 hits per day. It's a shame it an entertainment site though.
It's getting to much for him at the moment (growing to fast), so I'm going to whack up php-nuke for him. I've showed him some samples & installed it on my server.. now all we need is a cool theme.
I should write a script where 5 in every 100 gets directed to my site .. he'll never know

nar a basic loop script should do it.
just punch a few keywords into a text file.
punch another list of pron stars into another text file.

set it to make a few pages of each combination & your set.

I did this with a jobs site a while back.
every page was the same, except for the country/region & the type of job being offered on that page.

Two weeks later hotjobs ends their lead program.. bugga.
Traffic came good though, just a little late.

Unless you're running some sort of lotto site that gives away a million bucks a day, the only way that I can think of to get that volume of visitors is to offer pornography.

I'd have to rank that kind of a site as having an large 'Backroom' with high-end servers and programmers.

Have you considered an on-exit agreement where you get his traffic when they leave his site? It depends on the content of both sites of course, but may be worth a thought.

The only sites I can think of that I recall having that kind of traffic (outside of the porn biz) are Amazon.com and Sears.com. I think there are a few others along those lines, too.

The one thing they all have in common is MASSIVE amounts of advertising!!!

Amazon's links and name are everywhere, and Sears advertises its bricks-and-mortars all over the TV, radio, newpapers, special mailings, etc. So when people who like Sears shop online, they are pretty prone to thinking of trying Sears.com just from the strength of the bricks and mortar brand.

I believe the advertising budgets of these places literally run in the 100s of millions of dollars...

As for porn, there's so many porn sites around that for any single one of them to get 1m hits/mo would probably not be too cheap for them, either. Although it's cheaper for them to get VISITORS than a clean site, it probably costs at least as much for true customer acquisition.

Well I meant per month.

I was chatting with a guy from geekvillage last night and he almost thumbed his nose up at me because he gets one million uniques per month to his search engine.

He could have been fibbing but I believe him because he owns mp3search.com and other search engines.

His first question was how many uniques I get and when I told him I think he fell off his chair.

The reason I was talking with him was because he has an offer to sell 100k daily visits from Asia and I was trying to figure out if they would be worth buying from him.

No body wants Asian visitors<IMG src=http://www.abestweb.com/ubb/icons/icon36.gif>

Well anyways I hate being shown up so I thought I would ask you all about how to get one million per month.

I agree with Leader. Definitely a ton of advertising. Save your pennies now for a 60 second commercial on the Super Bowl. The only other way that I can think of would be to create something controversial at your site that would receive media attention and drive people to your site. That may bring in the traffic but it probably would cost a lot in the loss of revenues as merchants try to steer clear of controversy.

That's kind of where I was going with this too.

Not so much a controversy but a publicity stunt. We forget the power of a good publicity stunt. Remember Taco Bells Target for mier? (is that correct spelling for mier?)

The first way you could get 1,000,000 unqiues in 1 month to your site would be some serious advertising. The larger you buy the cheaper the rates get. If buy like $20,000 worth of popunders from fastclick you can get a rate of like $1 CPM. You could also try some ad agentcies they seem no to charge as much as some ad networks.
I have my own smaller ad network if you want to pay me a sh**load of money I can get you 1,000,000 unique visits in a month. I could get you 1,000,000 unique visits for under $10,000 but not in month.(yet) But then again I dont think most people would trust some guy they've never heard of before with $10,000.

If you dont want to go and spend a 10K or so advertising, the best way would be to make something that no one else has done before. Look at google. They haven't done any online advertisings besides a breif thing with befree and the powered by google thing on yahoo.

Thats about the best I can think of.

Wire up Britney Spears Bedroom and bathroom with a few WebCams and charge 1.00 per minute to the voyers out there in Cyberspace. If your just looking for a tricks for clicks deal then make a bid for TopText/Ezula ..it be cheaper after the lawsuit...and you might get away with it for a month or two.

Build one site that gets 300 visitors a day.

Repeat 110 times.

Lansing you are probably closest to a realistic answer. That takes a lot of work including trial and error.

I don't think that you need to actually build different sites or domains but the idea of building pages after pages is just as well as long as they target different keywords and subjects.

That is the reason I decided to go with a search directory for this site. No limits to what you can do with it.

My idea is to make html pages based on keyword subjects seen on the front page and allow those pages to be indexed into search engines and then kind of work from the outside in towards the index.html and then resell that traffic on the ppc search engine.

I did a smaller scale experiment with this a few months ago with great success and now have to burry my nose in work to get it accomplished for searchany.com on a much larger scale.

Before I started all of this work I needed to tweak things out so that I don't end up wasting my time and having to start all over so that is why I asked the big question.

Heyder, If I'm not mistaking the owners of http://mp3search.com/ live in Santa Cruz, same place as me, If I'm not mistaken they sued music industry when napster shut down. I'm not 100% sure on this though.

What if you had a page for each product from every data feed from every merchant.. could you get 1 million unique products? Then you would only need 1 visitor a month to each product page.

Have a series of content sites that have been around for 5 years and update almost every day. It sure as hell doesn't happen overnight.

Make the content small and digestable for people at work or college kids between classes. Avoid profanity and sex to avoid being filtered (kinda failed here, but knowing now I would have been more strict).

And just remember, 99% of that traffic will be junk traffic. It will just cost you something and you will never get a return. But that traffic is useful for other things. While we don't quite have a million uniques a month across our sites - currently at 750,000 but will drop to 650,000 probably during the summer, I make more money off of affiliates sites selling with under 1000 uniques a month, then content sites with large traffic.

It was what I needed in order to get revenue from overture.com for a ppcse that I had. Also to answer your question, yes it is a lot. If I had a million unique visitors per month my income would be about $600,000 per year. If you're making more than that please share I'd love to hear it.

Jason, I have no idea what on Gods earth you are talking about.
