I have a site that was #13 a month ago for a fairly competitive keyword. Now the keyword is gone(not in 1000).
The index page is a PR5, no drop with loss of keywords. and no big changes to the site were made.
the keyword phrase, "Free blue widgets" is #11 if I do allinanchor:free blue widgets and #14 if I search for "free blue widgets" (with the quotes)
I cannot figure out what happened. can anyone? Any idea at all what happened to those (theres actually about 4 keyword phrases, all in first 4 pages) keywords? I feel like I'm missing something...

I'm not sure I know what you mean, but no links were changed, I checked and double checked. I don't use any hidden text or other evils. Though, if it was a penalty my PR would go down, wouldn't it?

I'm with C4.
I've looked againg in a matter of hours and had them return.
I can't explain why!
Predictable, really I suppose. It was an act of purest optomism to have posed the question in the first place. (John Cleese: Cheese Shop)

Mine disapeared 10 days ago, and havn't returned at all. I see other keywords on other sites come and go, or go from #2 to #20, then back again, but these just plain disappeared!!

This happened to me as well...unfortunately it was for a couple of high ranking pages, ones that brought me in a lot of traffic.
My traffic has fallen from about 1000 uniques to 800 uniques per day. I am hoping that they show up again...I think this is something we are just going to have to get used to from time to time.

IMO this is happening because of Googles' Crapbot (Crapbot(TM) by Heyder I think ) - on one hand I love the continuos update because new sites get in on the fly, but the old and established pages tend to have problems.
Did Googlebot visit your site during these 10 days?

My unique traffic went from 800 to 90 a day. Yup that's 90. I get hundreds of return visitors thankfully.
c4: yup googlebot was there, 8/10 days. So I'm sure there's no penalty.
Is google broken?
