Something's going on. I just had a couple of sites disappear. No panic yet though...

If your websites vanished, do not panic. Many, and I mean MANY webmasters (webmasterworld) are in the same position. Let's wait a few days and see where things stand then.

Being in a large group of people that had their pages vanish doesn't make me feel any better.

GoogleGuy said wait 3-4 days, then if your site is still gone, panic. But i wouldn't worry until everything is settled. He did post an interesting comment
"That's going to be a hard wake-up call for a lot of people. The people who urge to move to more blackhat and throwaway domains are running in the wrong direction"

    Blackhat meaning Spam

I wouldn't mind if it stays like this.
Then again, I wouldn't mind if it changes back either

    Let the shopping season begin

I didn't notice last year because a Google algo change messed up my rankings, hmmmmm.

Call me dense, but actually, what changed at the update? I went to webmasterworld and am still as clueless as ever?

Is it true that reciprocal links are no longer of any use in google ranking? That's the only thing I managed to guess, other than the sky is falling cry throughout the thread.

I've heard that Google is cracking down on spammy jokers who buy domain after domain after domain, stuff them with keywords, run a datafeed, link them all together, and form their own little dynasty.

I think Google is getting fed up with the tricks and schemes...I say it's about time. Clean house!

    womanht,

You've got to take anything you read with a grain of salt. Nobody KNOWS what Google's algorithm actually is, so everybody comes up with their own ideas based on their own experience, which may or may not have anything to do with reality.

About the only things you can bank on are items posted on WMW by Googleguy (and these aren't usually very concrete). Everything else is guesswork or someone's wishful thinking.

It looks like it is back to the old results right now, but this weekend they had clearly elimintaed the recurring porno-popup sites that had infested some some of the search results.

I believe they did this by placing more emphasis on DMOZ listings.

I hope they bring back the results I was seeing this weekend.

There's a good read in googledance about the 'google dance' so you can find out what everyone is surmissing there about this latest update - like wyvern says, you can't really tell what's going on in google - you can only make educated guesses and even then it's really only a guess at that...

Just have to wait till the dust settles and hope that google will sift out the good and the bad...

No one has a clue, lot of panicky seo's over there. They'll make monthly changes only to have Google do another update and favor the way they had it before they changed it. All i know is i'm very happy with this update, have already seen an increase in traffic and when it finally settles, even better. I would just use basic SEO and make a good enough site where other sites will link to you on their own without a recip link.

Hummm, I don’t see a big difference on any of the terms that I keep an eye on, but my traffic is way up. I don’t know if it’s due to the activity at Google or increased traffic because of Christmas, but the big boost I just received coincides with the appearance of this thread. One of my search terms was flooded with a bunch of those throwaway domains about 2 weeks ago. The first 8 pages of the serps were nothing but the same page on 80 different sites. Running the same database, with the same parameters in the query string. And all of the pages said “We’re sorry, but we can’t find any products matching your search”. I’m still seeing a lot of those pages on –in, but it looks like half of them have disappeared.

I'm seeing alot of spammy doorway-page sites gone now, as well as a number of sub-domain intensive sites MIA...

In addition, several of my sites saw an increase in PR this morning.

Other than that, and a few dropped pages, I don't think it's much to worry about.

During the last "major" update, I had a very well-ranked site go MIA for about 3-4 weks, but it returned in to the serps in time.

Just another reason not to keep all your eggs in the google basket (I learned that the hard way).

The more the legit webmasters report the SE spammers the more Google eats them up like pac-man.

This is probably a dumb question, but what is a SE Spammer?

I keep seeing mention of the term in this and other threads, but I haven't seen an explanation for it. I mean, How does one "spam" a search engine?
