I've never noticed any of my pages showing as a
    "Supplemental Result" until recently.

Anyone know what the difference is in a "supplemental" result as opposed to a "regular" result ?

The Supplemental results appear to have been dredged up from somewhere other than the regular index. Often they seem to lead to dead pages or 404s.

    Hmmm... Thanks Dynamoo .

So I take it we really don't know what they are, or where they come from, and , for that matter, what kind of weight they have with Google, if any. These "supplemental" pages of mine aren't ranking for the keywords they were supposed to, so I guess that answers some questions. What questions it answers, I do not know.

Why does Google mark results as supplemental? I noticed that many of my pages are tagged as supplemental now and they do not lead to 404s so I don't understand their supplemental tags. Any ideas?

I think "supplemental" also applies to pages that were indexed in the last crawl (which was incomplete) but remain in the index anyway.

Even though these pages aren't new? I have 2 sites that have been around for a couples years, one over 5 years, with decent PRs of 5 and 6 and most of their pages now show as supplemental results. Why would they go from regular to supplemental?

I think it's simply a bug. There's lots of evidence that Google screwed up some of the latest index, I suspect this is just another piece of the puzzle.

Thanks. That sounds hopeful, at least if it's a bug then things just may get better.
