I've finally stuck my toe in the AdWords water...
Question: if I target specific keyword phrases by using brackets, is it correct that only that exact phrase will trigger an impression, so there's no need to specify negative keywords?
ie if I use:
[brown widgets with pink spots]
then a search on 'free brown widgets with pink spots' won't trigger an impression?

That is correct.
Brackets = Exact
[This Keyword] = would only display if the exact phrase was this keyword, if they searched for "looking for this keyword" the ad would not appear.
Quotes = Exact Phrase
"this keyword" = would display on terms like "looking for this keyword"
