As far as I found out google runs a hidden directory like the yahoo one and they redefined some categories. So I found that some of the listings which had good google ranks like "men's wear" can now be found under "men's clothing" with the same ranking as they had before. The definition what "wear" is has changed.

Carneol, do you mean the Google Directory?

    http://directory.google.com/

This is a version of the ODP which has been around for ages. They took it off Google's front page a while back, which is a shame. From time to time the ODP will rename categories and move them around.

No dynamoo. I know the google directory well. It must be a hidden directory where google has other categories than in the directory. I found this when looking in some google boards. There people posted that they have another rank than in the regular google directory. This rank has almost not changed while the rank in the desktop search went down on hunderds of positions and with it the pagerank. When I doublechecked that I found that everything related to "wear" was moved over to "clothing" So I think that the categories have changed. I found no change in google visible directory so I must believe that there is a hidden directory.
