What is the story with these site submission services that claim that they can list you on several of the "top" paid submission sites for $49-$99 bucks in 48 hours.

Are they any good? Are there any other alternatives that work?

    Here are example services:

All those things are crap. You're going to get the bulk of your free SE traffic from the big 3: Google, Yahoo, or MSN. Those are free and you just need links to your site. The only money i would spend as far as SE's would be on PPC.

Trust is correct and you can get links from some free directories if you work at it.

There is an interesting thread at SEW entitled "56 Directories To Submit To So You Get Better Rankings"

Thanks Adam, Great Thread. Just in time, I was searching for something similar.

Don't waste your money on the professional submit sites. I've heard some of them actually cause you more trouble than they're worth.

Focus on quality incoming links from quality sites that compliment your site. The SEs love to find new sites all on their own.

The current thinking is that it's better NOT to submit your sites, but rather to let the search engine spiders FIND your site through links on other sites.

With the list of directories, just make sure the links go directly to your site and aren't done through redirection. Check each one individually and carefully. Most are OK, but some are using 302's.
