May Google sue them and Gator's butt off! Google ought to have the money to really romp on it...

What do you expect from the ethical minds of Idealabs. Incubating theftware/parasites to get to the commission pools of the networks like CJ and BeFree makes sense for the greed mongers. Sure nice to see that Gator and Overture team up to double dip the keyword advertisers and overwrite all affiliate cookies with their popups. Bet Yahoo is thrilled with this move and we all know Google loves the B-A-HO Gator popunder listings on their site.

Shame on all the merchants who sign up with Gator and pay their extortion fee as these perps drain your Overture accounts.

    That is totally disgusting.

Are any affiliates still using their PPC?

Let's hope they do their stupid thing and end up with both Microsoft and google after them in court.

Some very repected web marketing gurus recommend overture for pay per click. I wonder what their stand would be on overture now.

I would think it shouldn't affect anything. Overture is supplying listings, big deal, just one of 40,000+ partners they have. They still reach 50%+ of the internet with just two partners, Yahoo and MSN, so womanht, as for Microsoft suing Overture? Not a chance when Overture pays MSN 10's of millions of dollars to have exclusive rights to their network. I use Overture, Findwhat, and Kanoodle to promote my programs, and they've exploded over the last 3 months! I look at it this way, even the ding-a-lings who use Gator have to buy products from somewhere........

I haven't used Oversure since they became so anti-affiliate over a year ago that they were rejecting listings from my sites for made-up, nonsensical reasons (some of which didn't even apply to the listing submitted AT ALL)!

Since they started that nonsense it has been my opinion that they should rot and this just adds to that opinion.

I posted over at webmasterworld under another name Google-Overture-Gator and it seems many webmasters will be dropping Overture because they don't want to be associated with scumware.

It looks like another deeply stupid move by Oversure. Not only will a lot of people stop advertising, but as far as I can tell, the quality of traffic delivered by Gator is pisspoor.. but it's going to cost them Overture prices!

That's the achilles heel of this plan though.. Overture prices are usually very high. It would be fairly easy for disgruntled webmasters to sabotage campaigns, especially done in a coordinated fashion. Imagine what happens with 1,000 webmasters clicking on "casino" at $20.00 per shot.

I'm all for Dynamoos observation. Drain those keyword accounts for the high dollar keywords. A coordinated plan like that will even target the merchnats who feed the spammers. Mortgages -Casinos -Drug pushers and the penis envy group.

After Overture rejected my merchant site for 'truck tarps', which I was actually selling on that page, I cursed at them and stewed for a year. It tok an entire year to cool down, then I approached them again, and got 40 out of 40 submissions accepted.

I have been using Overture to promote sales of tarps successfully, but I'm not going to anymore, because I do NOT want to be associated with Gator directly or indirectly.

This is a terrible decision by someone who does not, apparently, mind associating themselves with a company of questionable morality for bucks.

If you stop using Overture because of this, don't just go away quietly, take a minute to TELL THEM WHY!

Today I cancelled my Platinum Advertiser account. From the new minimum bids to their blatent disregard for affiliates and merchants overhead, it's time to let Overture and others know that screwing the little guy ain't gonna make it..

Dynamos plan only hurts advertisers and puts more money in overtures own pockets? I won't be doing that myself!

I saw a spam site a while back that suggested the same kind of thing on people advertising bulk email. If you want to put money in overtures pockets go right ahead but why help benefit the one who is steping up to screw you?

Did some reviewing, don't know if Overture's listings will show up on Gator, or sites owned by Gator. But, Gator owns www.searchscout.com, and that seems to be where the listings from Overure are appearing. Plus, after visiting that site, I checked my system for Gator parasites, and didn't find any.

It's amazing because according to the Alexa rankings, searchscout now has an internet weekly traffic ranking of 146, and reaches 8550 per 1000000 internet users!

Just sent a note to Overture and explained why I am not going to refill my account after it's drained. Not that that will matter to them: it would take several hundred people to do the same thing before they took notice.

Here's Overture's response when I asked them why:

    Apr 6 2003 9:46 PT

    Hello Thomas,

    Thank you for your inquiry.

I understand that you may have some concerns about Gator. There has been a lot of recent media coverage about applications that embed themselves into an Internet user?s browser and possibly track online behavior. Overture has evaluated Gator?s practices and determined that its strict operating guidelines provide a high-quality user experience.

All authorized distribution of Gator Corporation software products is "permission-based," and requires an active consumer action before the software is downloaded and installed. Overture?s paid search listings, and Gator advertising in general, are delivered to users of free software, which is part of the Gator Advertising and Information Network (GAIN), only after a clear disclosure that advertising will be delivered to users. Users choose to receive GAIN-supported software in exchange for providing their affirmative assent to receiving GAIN ads, which are always labeled as such. GAIN ads are delivered to a user?s computer screen when they are relevant to the user; and, according to Gator, these GAIN ads are 10 to 40 times more effective than traditional Web advertisements. Gator also provides an easy-to-use uninstall program that other companies don?t offer.

Additionally, data that Overture gathered from testing with Gator suggests that the click-through rates to our advertisers are comparable to the click-through rates on the current Overture network.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of any further assistance.

    Sincerely,

    Randy Wright

WOW.... What a canned partner answer that is! Sounds like Gator provided that one up front from assurity that it would become an issue with some sooner, or later.

Well ... it looks like I have to find another reliable PPC service to replace them for our web clients. Problem is ... there are very few and obviously getting lesser each day by this response from a service I did respect at one time.
