Hi all. I currently use Yahoo GeoCities as my host but I pay for monthly service under the professional package. (I think I pay about $15 a month.) I have used a free Hitbox acct to track my traffic for a few months. Yesterday my Hitbox stopped working. I finally figured out that Yahoo actually entered code in to my site, disbanded the Hitbox, and wrote "Yahoo has a counter". They also added code that didn't convert and actually showed up on my published site! I am new to this, but how in the world can they do this? I could understand if my hosting was free, but I pay for it every month. Also, I looked through my hosting agreement and I didn't see anything that specifically said I could not have a counter on my site. I think the thing that bothers me the most is that code was showing on the bottom of my site for a day and a half. Can someone please comment - is this within their rights to do this? Either way, I'm in the market for a new host!

Yes that's very odd. Yahoo is too stuck on themselves to do real hosting. They think their sh*t don't stink or something.

Time to get a new host.

Agree! I would not stay with a host who felt it was OK to change my page. If they had a problem with your hit counter, they should have emailed you and asked you to change it, not storm in and do so on their own!

I would be more than curious about this...I would be absolutely irate. Yahoo has no right to change the content on your site. If there is questionable content, they can ask you to remove it. If it is a violation of their TOS (such as porn, etc), then they can remove your site all together. Taking your counter out, and putting a note promoting their own that shows on your site...that is rediculous...I would be looking for a new host.

I've had a free site with them, well with Geocities, for about six years and all kinds of strange things happen to my code. Yours sounds deliberate but usually what happens to me is bits and pieces of other people's code ends up on my pages infrequently. Some backup problem or something. I like to leave them little notes (that they probably never see) like !-- Be more careful when you back up my site--

I always thought they were just sloppy but from what you said they did to you, my guess is that they have no respect for your work.

If I didn't get so much traffic on that site I would move it but its free anyway. You, on the other hand, have every right to be outraged.

Why not move it somewhere and put an automatic redirect onto the problem site?
I wouldn't put up with something just because I had alot of traffic.

You know it never really occured to me before because I make no money off that site but if I did move it to a real domain and inform (ask) backlink sites to upgrade their info. I could at least put some kind of sponsor ad at the top instead of those cheezy Link Exchange banners that Geocities allows.

It never ceases to amaze me how a fresh perspective can completely change one's focus. Thanks WorkerBee.
