I've got a .us name that I want to start using this month, will it be indexed ok by the search engines? I don't see any .us sites in search results so far.

As far as I know they've been live since April 24. If your registrar accepts the Nameserver changes, it should be live. I've not done that yet with mine.

Apr 24 was only 3 weeks ago - it would be unlikely any .us names would be on search radar yet.

Ok, I've got another (dumb) question.. I assume these domains work like any other, I just open a hosting account somewhere, update the DNS and that's it - correct? I usually buy the domain + hosting together, but this time I've just got a .us name with no hosting, hence the 'dumb' question.

Yep. Get a host, change the DNS and you will be all set.
