Hi

I am in the UK, but I want to start up a US site, and would like it to be hosted in the US.

I am looking for a reliable and fairly cheap host with most of the usual features. Cgi bin, php, est...

Can anyone please recommend a few that I can investigate?

Thanks

At risk of getting boring, try www.infodoma.com (this isn't an affiliate link). All the usual features, plus if you contact them, you can work out a custom hosting plan at a good rate. I use them and Zain, who runs the company, is a pretty good guy.

i1internet are reliable, only drawback is a 5gig transfer limit (very costly if you go over).
I recently started using THMedia (an abw member) and looking good so far.
Apollo Hosting and HostPod are very reliable, but not the cheapest options.

I've been with Hostrocket two years ago and I was happy at that time, but I most liked both Ventures Online]. It's not the cheapest solution though.

Try amhosting.com -- I've been using them and found that they provide excellent service and their plans seem very reasonable for what you get. I think their shared hosting is something like $5/month and you get PHP, CGI-bin, 4-gig/month transfer. I've found them to be reliable.

Nick,
I'd like to ad that ABW members, such as yourself get a 50% discount on our hosting packages. You can visit http://abw.thmedia.net for more info.

Tom,
I was going to buy a plan 1 package from your site but backed out 'cos it seemed like I already needed a Plan 4 package in order to get one

Your site says to remember to select a reseller plan in order to get the reduction. On the order page it says, please note that in order to get a reseller discount, you must already have a Plan 4 or higher at regular price or the order wont be processed. I retreated in confusion.

Sorry for the confusion. When a 'regular' client hosts with us and decide they want to start a second site, they will get a discount on those extra sites as long as they have a Plan 4 or higher. This restriction does not apply to ABW members. I use the term reseller on the sign-up form to avoid confusion to regular clients. ABW members are welcome to sign up for any account they want with the discount. I will make sure that it is corrected. The problem is in the fact that the sign-up form is shared among all customers. The creator of the software we use is working on a means of entering a promotional code to offer the discounts. Members would just sign up and enter something like ABW in the sign-up form and automatically get the discount. He hasn't given me a release date, but hopefully will be soon. I hope this helps, and if you haven't made a choice yet, we would love to have you on board1!

And avoid FreeHostingWeb for cheap. I've had a client site there down twice that I know of in the last couple of months.

In general my attitude is that cheap and realiable are mutually exclusive.

That was a general statement, particuar situations may vary .
