Long long ago, .net domains could only be registered by networks... I know that anyone can now register a .net domain, but is there any tech reason that it can't be used for non-network purposes?

I'm not talking "it's not a dotcom" stigma or cosmetic issues, I'm asking are there still restrictions on the use of the domain.

I can't imagine that there are (or who would enforce them), but there are lots of things in this world that I can't imagine.

I just grabbed the .net version of my URL two weeks ago and there were no restrictions. Now I'm just waiting until April to grab the owned but unused .org and I'll have all three

If you're serious about building your own web presence, I think it's cheap insurance to pick up the .net and .org versions of your domain, plus your own country domain and maybe some others such as hyphenated versions, singular-plural variations, predictable misspellings, or .biz, .info, etc..

Such coverage wouldn't be worthwhile for the unbrandable keyword-stuffed-name.com type of domain, but for a domain where you're hoping to establish some definite branding of your own, picking up at least the obvious variations could head off some problems.

Very cool -- I just picked one up for a 500+ searches a day phrase where all the other TLDs were registered by various squatters... and there's very little SE competition.

Now if I can just make money with it.

    Thanks for the answer.

You're right, of course, Elisabeth. And probably something else I should investigate.
