Hey, is anybody using GoDaddy's DomainsByProxy.com? I searched for it in the archives but didn't turn up anything--I think it's a new service.

    http://www.domainsbyproxy.com/

It's supposed to protect your privacy by handling ownership of your domain. You still retain the rights to it, and can sell it, etc., and it's through GoDaddy, who seems trustworthy so far. There's a link to a pop-up on the site that demonstrates the difference in a WHOIS search between one of their/your domains and a normally-registered domain.

It appears to be an extra $10/year, but that could still pay off if you, for example, decide that you don't need a P.O. Box since your address won't be available through a WHOIS search (although it's still probably a good idea to have one anyway!).

Interesting. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has used this service.

    Hey,

Just an FYI that the price for this service seems to have (already) dropped to $6.50/yr.

    I would not recommend it.

Check with other forums to find out if anyone has had any experience with them. There have been instances where registrars have stolen names if they were really good.

In this case you have to transfer ownership to them. But are they a registrar or merely a private company? Do they have an ICANN licence?

More importantly, using this service may violate the ICANN agreement. You are required to list your personal information with every domain name, if you fail to do so you *may* loose it. If someone challenges your ownership this will prove bad faith.

If you really want to protect yourself, I suggest you establish a company that doesn't need to be registered with your local authorities.

This is a GoDaddy service, and they've got a pretty good rep, but it certainly does pay to be cautious!

Check this out: the price is now down to $5! Guess the demand isn't quite there. I think it will work out for them, though.

Not *entirely* sure I trust GoDaddy. I use them, but once I checked an unlikely sounding domain name that no-one but me would want. I went back a short time later to buy it and some trout farm had bought it!

Not that its fish related, and you'd have a hard time selling anything on it. I find it difficult to believe no-one wanted this domain for years and years then within 24 hours two people did. You would only want it as a joke or as a rather specialized porn site.

I think GoDaddy have something that collects a list of names people look at, then I think these names get passed to their friends.

Not a crime, but it gives me pause for thought.

What I did not like about the Domains by Proxy is that GoDaddy owns it and "technically" I still own it. What happens if GoDaddy goes under? How do I prove I own it?
