I have found a couple of domain names I am interested in. My question is how can I find out about its past history and if it was ever banned from google?

    Hi Cazzie,

Don't know how to find out if a domain was banned from Google but you can usually get good info on what pages used to contain at http://www.archive.org/ and http://www.alexa.com/

    Thanks
That was what I was looking for. Also have a few more questions. If I use those links and nothing shows up in the results does that mean someone had bought those domains but never used them?

Also when checking dotster, godaddy and others, a domain name appears to be available on one site but not another, why is that?
    Thanks
    Cazzie

Have a look in the news.admin.net-abuse.sightings newsgroup to see if it's been used for spamming.. this might give you a clue too.

    Good suggestion Dynamoo.

Cazzie: Different domain registrars sometimes give different result for a number of reasons:

    1) Smaller registrars may not be using the direct connection to the registry to check availability and instead use the WHOIS service which can easily be 24 hours out of date.

    2) Other may look to see if a domain is in the DNS system instead of using the registry, which means if a domain is on hold (legal reason, or being prepared for deletion) then it may show as available when it isn't)

    3) The registry may be down temporarily, and as a safety measure regiustrars may show a domain as taken if they are unable to check with the registry so they don't take peoples money for a domain that isn't available.

    4) hiccup ;-)

I try to remember to check candidates at:

    http://relays.osirusoft.com/cgi-bin/rbcheck.cgi

... to see if it's been banned big-time from parts of the internet for spamming etc.

    Are you Crazy?
