ICANN have implemented a new procedure to minimise the impact of unintentionally deleted (non renewed) domains.
Basically, once a domain is deleted, there is a 30 day grace period where a mistaken deletion can be redeemed by the original registrant.
DNS won't resolve during this period, so a dead site should alert an owner who wasn't aware of the situation.
