I am lusting after a certain domain that will expire at the end of the month (again). The owner of this domain has renewed every year since it's inception in 1998. In all probability, the current owner will renew again.... But, I want to be in place in case the current owner doesn't renew.

I would only re-direct it to my current site which is an alternate spelling .

The question relates to this post: My-Web-Site.Com

Who offers the best backorder services for this situation?

Thanks,

Doc

About a year ago there was a domain name that I wanted. I set both Snapnames and Expirefish to watch it. Snapnames got it, for whatever that's worth.

[Don't ask me if I've done anything productive with it yet!]

If its likely to be renewed and you don't want to spend $69 on a snapnames subscription you should place a bid at namewinner.com, bids start at $8.75 and you only pay if we get the domain for you.

Regards,

Mark......

P.S. I can't promise we would be more successful but yesterday a typical recent day for us and someone did an analysis that showed that of 61 names that had snapbacks and dropped yesterday:

Namewinner did get 35 names out of 61 thats 57 %
Snapnames did get 15 names out 61 thats near 25 %
Buydomains with his Club 7 names out 61 thats 11 %
Nicgenie 1 name
007 names one name disks.com
Namefox 2 names
Id registrar 1 name

(There were not Namewinner bids on all 61 names so our success percentage was probably higher than that indicates)

As I said, I think it is likely the current owner will renew.

I don't understand, "bids start at $8.75 and you only pay if we get the domain for you."

Doc:

Namewinner is a different business model to Snapnames.

With Snapnames you pay $69 in advance and if they don't get the name you can transfer the snap to another name (up to the 1 years expiration of the snap).

With Namewinner you pay nothing in advance, we have an auction model like ebay where anyone can place a bid on a name that is going to expire with a minimum bid of $8.75 (and like ebay you can have a proxy bid of the maximum you are willing to pay). If we get the name when it expires then it goes to whoever the highest bidder was and we charge their credit card at that time.

Hope this helps.

I found a domain name that I really liked that was expiring recently. I noticed that someone had already purchased the snapback on it so i was like what are the oddds i am going to beat this and the other companies? Not likely! I gambled and located the owner of the domain and asked him about it and bascially he renewed it and told me to *&*&( Myself. The domain is a top level domain and now he wants between 5000-10000 dollars for it and won't even give me kick me back. The domain name was newcoupons.com

This is the problem.. domains are pretty worthless unless someone actually wants them, and then people get greedy. <sigh>

Thanks for the advice. I appreciate each of you and, for that matter, everyone here at ABW !

I used snapnames and lost every time ... pissed away my $69.00 and I never got the commission on the self purchase either. When they offered the refund, earlier this year, I applied and jumped through all the stinking hoops, then they rescinded the offer. I will never, ever, ever use snapnames again!!!!!

ExpireFish ... don't get me started!

------------

Mark,

I look forward to both, using and promoting Namewinner.com!

I *tried* to register with Expirefish but I just couldn't get to grips with the interface.

There's a service called Dropcatcher, but they never activated my account. I think they like to keep their business "private".

Expirefish is a TOTAL waste of time. Lots of stories of deposits taken and no success.

Dropcatcher is a private service. He decides if he wants to chase names for you, and doesn't appreciate whiners. So if he says no, don't email him back. :^)

I gotta tell you... The best thing about ABW is the people who log on and tell you what they really think... It really is an invaluable resource.

So, I Guesss I will reconsider the SnapNames Backorder Program...

Mark,

I used Namewinner to buy a domain. It expired 17 days ago. When can I expect to get control of it? The WHOIS says it still belongs to the other guy though he didn't renew it.

Thanks,

You on't buy domains at NameWinner, you BID for them.

If it only expired 17 days ago, you've got a fair wait yet, before it finally gets deleted, and there is NO GUARANTEE Namewinner will be successful.

And if you haven't put in a proxy bid worth at least what the name is worth, you're likely to get out-bid in the closing moments.

Just won one on Namewinner when I also had a bid against it on Snapnames.. picked it up for the minimum price too.

I've got another Namewinner vs Snapnames runoff in the next couple of weeks I guess, so I have high hopes.

Of course, the problem is that I have two unused Snapbacks. Hmmm. But in any case, Namewinner seems to rule
