In the last few days I have gotten several emails from Ebates, which I signed up for to keep an eye on things.
Every email, when opened launches a new pop under window for buy.com, overwriting any affiliate cookie on the person's computer.
So the millions of people recieving email from Ebates now has Ebate's affiliate cookie on their computer.
And there wasn't a single mention of Buy.com in the email whatsoever.

I'm sure this violates somethink, i know nothing will be done but there was a discussion about popping a merchant site.

I believe that Haiko alluded to this last week. So what's being done to stop this from happening?

The theftwarez folks will do every sleezy trick in the bag to overwrite affiliate cookies. Buy.com is a prime example of a etailer who could careless about any unethical practices that bring them traffic or they'd drop ebates and the others like a hot rock.

Next thing you know there will be auto downloads by the parasites via email.
They are doing anything they can to overwrite and set their own cookies.
Bet they have great sales for Buy.com this week! Everyone watch your stats to see if your sales go down.

Blame the idiot software vendor that decided to allow code within emails to overwrite 3rd party cookies in a file belonging to a completely different computer program!

You people do realise that if we all worked hard at weaning people off Outlook and IE, that most of our parasite problems would go away?

If everyone started expousing the security benefits of Netscape and Eudora on their websites, it would slowly sink in.

I did forward a copy of one of the emails to the affiliate manager and mentioned my displeasure.

    1. The BHO's use ActiveX (enabled by default in IE) to "drive-by install" themselves when a surfer browses a website.

    2. Once installed the parasite is able to hide itself, do nasty things like disable virus checkers, and contact it's controlling server and share any information it likes, and download, install and run any software sent to it by it's server.

    3. As Outlook uses IE's HTML renderer to display HTML in emails, it is also allows HTML code and images sent in emails to overwrite IE cookies.

So, if you clean your system of parasites, then install and use Netsape 7.02 (which is a great browser) and Eudora for email, your likelihood for accidental re-infection PLUMMETS.
