Hello,

I am in need of some good click-worthy graphics for my www.aimingpoint.com web site.

For this reason, I am starting a banner & box contest on ABestWeb. Here are the guidelines.

    1. Every entry is a winner. If you make any entry which took you longer than 10 minutes to create, you made a winning entry.

    2. Each entry must be animated/moving. So the only qualifications are that an entry must have taken longer than 10 minutes to make and that an entry must be animated.

    3. There is a 5 entry limit per person. This means that you can make up to 5 graphics designs for this contest.

    4. In order to qualify as separate entries, each unique entry must make use of different graphical elements (not just a change of text).

    5. Each entry may be either 60 height x 90 width in size or 60 height x 468 width. Each entry must be under 50kb in size, preferrably smaller.

    6. You may make use or inspiration of these graphics for the creation of your entry.

    http://aimingpoint.com/pic/aiming-point.gif
    http://aimingpoint.com/pic/aiming8040.gif
    http://aimingpoint.com/pic/aimingshort.gif

    7. The banner may either be a "trick" banner or it may indicate that the user will be directed to a meta search engine at aimingpoint.com.

    8. Along with your entries, you must give permission for me to use the entries without copyright infringement. Simply write, "I give Peter Kirby permission to use this graphic in advertising aimingpoint.com."

    9. Every (qualifying, see 1 through 5) entry will earn the following reward: the display of a 10-word (or less) link to a non-porn, non-illegal web site in HTML font size 3 (default) within the top fold (top 400 pixels) of the aimingpoint.com home page. Every qualifying entry will earn 1000 impressions for said link.

    10. The top three entries as chosen by me will earn 10,000 impressions instead of merely 1000 impressions for said link. (I reserve the right to make use of any entry, not just the top three.)

    11. Entries may be made by e-mail to kirby@earthlink.net or by posting the graphics in this thread.

    12. The top three winning entries will be declared on December 1, 2001. The close of the contest will be December 1, 2001.

Please reply to this thread just to make your interest known about the contest, whether or not you actually will make an entry. Or just post a comment about the concept of the contest. Thank you.

I've decided to make the contest even better!

EVERY ENTRY WILL EARN 3000 IMPRESSIONS!

These are impressions of a 10-word text advertisement in the top fold of a page. Text ads are usually more effective than graphics, and impressions are often sold for as much as $10 per 1000 impressions.

THE TOP THREE ENTRIES WILL EARN 20,000 IMPRESSIONS PLUS $10.00 USD CASH!

It is possible for just one person to win all three top entries, depending on the number of entries and the skill of that particular graphic artist. So this could be a fun and easy way to pick up some free advertising and a little cash.

All other rules remain in effect, although I reserve the right to make the contest even better for contestants.

I want to be able to measure interest in this contest. If you are giving ANY CONSIDERATION AT ALL of making an entry, or if you have ANY COMMENTS AT ALL about this contest, please post a reply in this thread or write an e-mail to kirby@earthlink.net. Thank you for your interest!

BASICALLY, I could imagine me considering an entry. But why should I make an ad for you to use and get only 3-5 bucks┬╣ for it -- if it's not a winning entry? Specially if I not only have to do the graphic work, but also the thinking (which is work too).

    ┬╣) Yes, I dont calculate with 10$CPM.

    Hello,

This is a good point. OK, I will make the contest better once again.

Every entry will earn 3000 impressions. Every person can make up to 5 entries. That does not change.

There will be _at least_ three entries chosen to be used by me. I may choose to use up to ten or so, especially if I receive some good entries. If your entry is chosen to be used, you will receive $10.00 plus 20,000 impressions per used entry. If your entry is not chosen to be used, it will not be used. You need only give me permission to use an entry once I have decided to use it and I have paid up the cash (and your impressions start to get displayed).

OK - so please get to work on those entries. Note again that I need both 90x60 boxes and 468x60 banners. Thanks!

    Peter Kirby,
Since you generally post such informative posts, I would consider it, but I am a graphically challenged being. My sense of color coordination is horrifying, and my use of drop shadows and inner beveling is childish. Everything I do graphically takes more than 10 minutes, hehehehehe.
Alas, I fear that it would be a waste of both of our time!

    Peter,

Could you give some additional info... like what are the top three end-user benefits of your site (vs. your competition)?

Or some other idea of the direction you want the ads to take...

    Hello,

    To Cedric:

Sure, thanks for asking. Here are the benefits of the Aiming Point Meta Search Engine.

    1. Figures out which search engines people click on most and ranks the search results accordingly! Aiming Point is the only meta search engine that does this.

    2. Doesn't sell out to the pay-per-click search engines like about 90% of meta search engines today (e.g., Mamma, Metacrawler) - you just get the good stuff! There will never be bidded listings in the Aiming Point search results. (Though I will probably do a top-3 deal with FindWhat eventually.)

    3. Includes highly popular search engines including Yahoo, AltaVista, Excite, Inktomi, Looksmart, and the Open Directory Project -- not a bunch of little ones nobody has ever heard of.

It is desirable to let the surfer know that they will be headed to a meta search engine with these features, as then the traffic will be targeted. However, since it is a free general interest service, I will also accept "trick" banners, as stated.

Thanks for your interest! I look forward to writing out the checks for some banners and boxes.

If you have any other questions or comments with regard to the contest, please feel free to post them. Or if you'd just like to declare that you might work on a banner, I wouldn't mind hearing that either. As stated before, I am interested in both 90x60 boxes and 468x60 banners. Please post your entries in this thread or e-mail kirby@earthlink.net with your entries. Thanks again!

Just so someone graphically capable will be motivated to help you out, I made these while too tired to code HTML properly (my grpahics capabilities cannot be lessened from the pits). Just laugh and hope someone gets in here with some capabilities.

And all the best luck with a non ppc search engine! I still love content on the net!

Okay, now guys, help Peter Kirby out here!
    LOL,

This thread has gone awful quiet, I hope I did not offend anyone with my previous posting. It was only meant as a bit if fun.

Gordon, I like it! Specially the "A" - it looks great. <IMG src=http://www.abestweb.com/ubb/icons/icon38.gif>
    ----------

And for the AimingPoint graphics.. I'd really like to do few things. But I dont have the time right now. (Maybe in few days)

    JIC:
    - How far can we go with the "Trick" banners?
    - And do you need to see the 'finished' ads, or would concept-samples be okay?
    - The "box" - is it a 90x60 ad or a search-box?

The box is a 90 width x 60 height GIF, not a search box.

    I hit send too early...

Gordon, I thought it was clever. Please provide a 10-word ad and a URL, and I will put you in the rotation for 3000 imps.

Webmistress, thanks for the encouragement. Please provide a 10-word ad and a URL, as I would definitely like to give you some credit for your work.

Quiet777, an example of a trick banner would be one that says "DON'T CLICK HERE." The user is intrigued even though the user doesn't know what it's all about. A poor example would be "CLICK HERE TO GET FREE MONEY." Sure, that might get a high CTR, but the user is guaranteed to be ticked off when he sees where she clicked through to. So I am more likely to use trick banners of the first kind, although I do have a slight preference for the targeted traffic that non-trick banners bring.

Concept samples are a great idea. Yes, I will accept concept sample entries. It might save everyone involved a little time with regards to the entries that don't end up being used - though, judging by the amount of interest generated so far, I am expecting a high percentage of used entries. If a concept sample is made as an entry, the only thing that I would ask is that the entrant have the skill and time to follow through with the concept if it is selected. (The idea of a concept sample is important for animations - doing all the frames can be a real time-consuming process.)

When submitting either a concept sample or a fully-formed entry, please provide a 10-word ad and a URL.

Update: I will be selecting for use mostly (perhaps entirely) 18k and smaller animations. I have been noticing that this size is a standard for several banner venues, which I did not know until recently. I will still accept larger size banners, but I probably just won't be using them.

The animation does not have to be complex; two frames is just dandy, especially given the size constraints. More frames is great too, so long as it stays under 18k for the best chance of use.

    Thanks again to all involved!

Yeesh, I always pay attention to my file size when it's my own ugly graphics I'm making   , didn't even look to see those buggers were up over 18k!!! Peter Kirby, I'd recommend trying to keep 'em 10-11 k at the largest. JMO.

I've gotten plenty of credit from your posts, thanks. Your continued input on these boards is more than my silly graphics capabilities are worth.

    Hello,

I would like to extend the contest by 1 day, so that everyone has all day Saturday and Sunday to submit an entry.

The used entries will be announced on Monday... I expect a high percentage of used entries. Thank you and good luck!

Here's a couple more entries i had a go at. They're both similar apart from the word and symbol 'target' on them. Didn't know if they would know that the 'dart board' meant target.

    They're 12k each.

    [edited to fix images ]

Like I said, I dont have that much time right now. Anyway, here you go
    <center>

    - 11k -

    - 21k -

    - 17k -

    </center>
The #2+3 need some more work. Also, imagine a mouse-cursor in the black frames (#2).

The "boxes" could be made using the same concept.

    Quiet777

ps. You dont have tagline, do you?

Just thought that i'd put in one last entry beofre the competition closes. Anywat, here it goes.

PS - I know some of the timing on the banners could do with a bit of fixing, especially on the first one (longer on the logo part). But if you want to use them i could fix them up for you.

A very rough sample. There could have been an "AimingPoint" in the foreground and maybe your still-unknown-tagline... but its like 11:50pm so I havent had time for that. You might get the idea tho.

My web site has been hacked. I may have to either delay the display of impressions (which works out because you both requested a delay anyway) or find some other means of compensation.

If you'd like, I will add the impressions to your cash prize at the rate of $1 per CPM. Otherwise I will give you the $10/$20 now and find some way of giving the impressions, either on Aiming Point or another site of mine.

Please e-mail / private message me with your thoughts. Thanks!
