On average, how many visitors (not click throughs) does it take to make a sale?

Depends on the quality of the targetting, and the quality of the merchant.

If someone comes to your site because he wants to buy a green left-handed widget, and you have a merchant who has good prices on them, and an easy to navigate site, you could have results as good as one in 5.

But if they came to learn how to use a widget, you won't do nearly as well. Maybe one in 500.

And if they came because someone paid them a nickel to visit your site, they won't ever buy anything.

Well with dental plans, it depends on the traffic source, but generally 1% of clicks purchase a plan. Higher from search engines, lower from banners.
