Hi Everyone,

This is more of a survey than a poll. Your answers are greatly appreciated and will help us decide how to proceed in developing our newest site.

    Thanks in advance!!

    ATKOgirl

    Here's the survey:

    Do you use datafeeds?

If so, approximately how many datafeeds do you incorporate into your site?

Have you created a site specifically to promote one merchant's datafeed?

Do you use the merchant's category structure or do you adapt the categories to fit into an established category structure on your site?

Do you make any changes or adaptations to the datafeeds before using them, or do you use them "as is"?

How often do you update the datafeed products listed on your site?

Do you update manually or do you have a script or other "automatic" means for upgrading?

Are your product pages static or dynamic?

What technology did you use to develop your product site (i.e. php, asp, perl, etc.)?

Have you paid for network access to datafeeds?

    Do you use datafeeds?

    YES

If so, approximately how many datafeeds do you incorporate into your site?

AS MANY AS I CAN GET.

Have you created a site specifically to promote one merchant's datafeed?

    YES

Do you use the merchant's category structure or do you adapt the categories to fit into an established category structure on your site?

    BOTH

Do you make any changes or adaptations to the datafeeds before using them, or do you use them "as is"?

ALWAYS CHANGE THEM SO MY SITE WILL BE DIFFERENT

How often do you update the datafeed products listed on your site?

ALMOST NEVER - I AM OFF WORKING ON AN NEW MERCHANT. IF THE MERCHANT DOESN'T HAVE A FAIRLY STABLE PRODUCT LINE, I DON'T WANT THEM. DON'T CARE IF THEY ADD STUFF BUT THEY SHOULD RARELY DROP STUFF.

Do you update manually or do you have a script or other "automatic" means for upgrading?

MANUALLY - SORT OF. USE WEBMERGE TO BUILD THE PAGES

Are your product pages static or dynamic?

    STATIC

What technology did you use to develop your product site (i.e. php, asp, perl, etc.)?

    HTML

Have you paid for network access to datafeeds?

WHAT ARE YOU KIDDING? ME PAY? THAT'S NUTS. MERCHANTS PAY ME NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.

I have answered only the questions I feel are appropriate.

    _Do you use datafeeds?

    YES

If so, approximately how many datafeeds do you incorporate into your site?

Many have only one, others have items from 5 or more.

Have you created a site specifically to promote one merchant's datafeed?

    Oh Yeah

How often do you update the datafeed products listed on your site?

    Weekly

Do you update manually or do you have a script or other "automatic" means for upgrading?

    Scripts

What technology did you use to develop your product site (i.e. php, asp, perl, etc.)?

    ASP, now ASPX .NET

Have you paid for network access to datafeeds?

OH YES! I love barriers to entry. It keeps most of the 'chatter' out of the search engines. I would actually prefer to pay for feeds over the merchant giving them to every joe with a purchased canned-script.

I think my timing was a little on the lucky side though

Yes, I also get a smile on my face when I see people *****ing about paying for a feed. That's one less competitor to worry about
[edit to add] Of course, there is a portion of merchant feeds wouldn't be worth squat.[/edit]

    >>Do you use datafeeds?

    Of course!

    >>If so, approximately how many datafeeds do you incorporate into your site?

Depends on the site. Some have one. A couple have many, many more.

    >>Have you created a site specifically to promote one merchant's datafeed?

    On rare occasion.

    >>Do you use the merchant's category structure or do you adapt the categories to fit into an established category structure on your site?

I adapt them right out the window whenever possible.

    >>How often do you update the datafeed products listed on your site?

That depends on the site. Everything from once every time H freezes over, to monthly.

    >>Do you update manually or do you have a script or other "automatic" means for upgrading?

WebMerge. It's not automated like a cron job would be, but it sure beats trying to type things in by hand!

    >>Are your product pages static or dynamic?

    Static.

    >>What technology did you use to develop your product site (i.e. php, asp, perl, etc.)?

    WebMerge.

    >>Have you paid for network access to datafeeds?

No. Although I'm not as categorically opposed to it as I used to be (I've noticed the same thing ChrisK mentioned), I haven't found any that I think are worth paying for. It seems bogus to pay a couple of hundred for the LS merchandiser program, for instance, when half of those merchants are crap (insultingly low commissions or other badness) and the other half have competitors who offer free feeds!

    _Do you use datafeeds?

    Yes

If so, approximately how many datafeeds do you incorporate into your site?

    Lots

Have you created a site specifically to promote one merchant's datafeed?

    Yes

Do you use the merchant's category structure or do you adapt the categories to fit into an established category structure on your site?

    Both

Do you make any changes or adaptations to the datafeeds before using them, or do you use them "as is"?

    Make changes

How often do you update the datafeed products listed on your site?

It depends on the merchant. Usually once every 2-4 weeks.

Do you update manually or do you have a script or other "automatic" means for upgrading?

    Scripts

Are your product pages static or dynamic?

Both, mostly static with a couple of very good dynamic scripts.

What technology did you use to develop your product site (i.e. php, asp, perl, etc.)?

    Perl, php.

Have you paid for network access to datafeeds?_

Sort of. I use mostly free feeds, but paid for access to CJ feeds because I have specific merchants that fit my sites and I have a way to display them that gets around Norton Ad Blocking. I won't pay Linkshare for access and wouldn't pay for an independant feed.

If the merchant have a stupid datafeeds yes, otherwise I do you use them "as is".

Since I don't put prices on those pages, only when it's for my benefit to update the datafeed.

Painfully manually with WebMerge and FrontPage.

_____Have you paid for network access to datafeeds?
Never had, never will ... as a matter of fact I was thinking of asking the merchant for some kind of extra commission for the time and hassle of me promoting more than 10 pages for them.
