Please help! I am wanting to start an affiliate website and have been checking out different programs to see who offers what. This morning I went to Blue Nile because I'm thinking I might try to build a jewelry site. Well when I left there, I typed "jewelry" into Google, and as soon as the results came up, another screen popped up for EBay jewelry. I closed the Ebay sight and within seconds it's there again, so I try it a few more times and see Commision Junction for a split second, then adfarm.mediaplex shows up before Ebay jewelry. I try to remain calm, and run Webroot Spysweeper thinking it will get rid of the problem. It doesn't...so I delete cookies and temp.folders to get rid of it..doesn't work. So I get back online later, type in "cars" in Google and this time, it becomes Ebay cars. Next time I type "clothes" and got dating and sex sites and was highly offended!HaHa...but on a serious matter this is really driving me nuts, because I am worrying if I were to join one of these programs, will this happen to my clients and them face these problems?? How do I rid myself of this mess up with cj/adfarm/mediaplex/Ebay?? Also, each time one ebay window opens, it shows 76 files added in temp. files. After a few times of this, it drastically slows things down for our dinosaur computer! (And how to keep it from happening??)Hope this is not too stupid of a question and I have the right area to post this. Thanks in advance for any help!!!!!!

The adfarm.mediaplex redirect is just part of ebays cookie setting process through CJ. The fact is some sleezeball BHO is using forced cookie setting with their own CJ links from your keyword searches. Your system has been hijacked and probably has a slew of nasties on it.

If you send me the URL I can tell you if it's just your system or everyone's.

You either have some form of spyware left on your machine or some affiliate is using illegal techniques to drive trafic to eBay.

Thanks for the replies! Just tried the online scan. It showed a program I have had no trouble with..a printshop for cards. I chose to delete it, just in case. I then went back to Google, typed "jewelry" in search:it flashes quickly from cj/adfarm/to this url http://pages.ebay.com/jewelrydollar/...ewe$1Affiliate This is how it shows on the toolbar without the "www" in front of address. As a matter of fact, my google search window for jewelry is minimized at the bottom as I am typing this, and I have just been interrupted by the same sequence of BS!!! Without my leaving this message board, it brought up new windows to cover this with ebay tacky jewelry! What can it be? I have been trying to fix this all day.

Sorry to hear you are having problems with your computer. I am interested in determing which program is installed on your computer and forcing clicks. If you can determine the software name or get me the whole qksrv.net tracking url (http://www.qksrv.net/click-XXXXXX-XXXXXXX), I can notify our compliance team. The XXXXX should be unique numbers.

    Thanks and good luck.

Here is what I have come up with..after countless clicking back and forth between the google search and extremely FAST pop-up/switch to ebay site...
commissionjunction.com/track/track.dll?AID=2831477&PID=153911(this had a upside down u with 2 lines thru it after the 153911)UID1811=1q42bip-8013
This may not be exact, but I'm back and forth reading the blurry speed type...and I keep getting kicked off of here with the ads going crazy now also...have typed this for 5 mins now...if I go back to google and change search word to a less popular search word the madness stops. Thank you for all of the help...this has never happened before and it's driving me crazy!!!!

It is the PID parameter that I need. The one you posted does not exist in our system, so I am assuming it is incomplete or incorrect.

It is weird because the UID parameter is a LinkShare value equivilent to our SID parameter.

Rhea, those pid entires in Google's index are not CJ related.

khc07, can you have a look in your browser history file? Do the URL rewrites show up there?

The other think to do would be to temporarily put

    qksrv.net 127.0.0.1

as an enty in your hosts file - that would stop the redirect dead and it would show in your browser status bar.

And even easier way might be to disconnect from the Internet before you click the search button - because the software that's doing this mess is on your computer, it will detect the click of the search button and may try to pop-up the window, but will stall as it tries to get to qksrv.net allowing you to see the PID.

O.K. I've been staring at the speeding bullets of text until my eyes are about to pop out and this is what I've got: When I have jewelry in the google search box, and I click search, this appears across the very top of my screen in the blue section and not in address bar; "commision junction.com/track/track.dll?AID=2831477&PID=153911&UID1811=8uvf9u-80138" I know part of the # is different than in above reply, but that's what it shows now, and I would swear it changes. Anyway, after that appears for a blink of an eye, this appears at the very top and in the address bar; (adfarm.mediaplex.com/ad/ck/711-1715-2978-22) for only a second before the EBay site appears. Every once in a while four or five windows will open one after another.
They don't show up in history either.
What does this mean? I empty temp files, do the google search for jewelry, it does its crazy EBay thing,I go to temp files, and it shows where google did its thing and then something called ww.4marketing21.com,
    cookie:jej@qksrv.net
    cookie:jej@commission junction, cookie:jej@mediaplex.com
    the rest is ebay stuff.
Thanks again everyone! All of the input has really taken me by surprise; I didn't expect this much support. You all are great!

Typing Jewelry in his search box and hitting "search the Moby engine" button gets nothing....no visible site structure under that page.

Whois.sc shows that as just being registered July 30th, 2004. Looks like the guy suddenly had a reason to come up with something that looks like a site...

    I'm sorry I left one out. (webthiswebthat.com/search/?account)shows after 4marketing21.com
Drewbert,I tried to do the search after I disconnected from internet...it didn't do anything, but thanks for the idea!
Should I contact Moby or who should I lodge complaint with if I can't solve this soon? If I at least knew where this mess comes from....
Thanks in advance for the continued help!

    khco7,

I'm sorry you're having so much trouble because of this. Your story is no doubt repeated hundreds (if not thousands) of times a day. Computer repair centers get busy every time something new comes out.

I blame Commission Junction in part for allowing these tricksters into the network in the first place. All behind a veil of accountability, there's little doubt that these software apps take advantage of consumers, and CJ continues to allow it.

And we wonder why CJ's ads and cookies get blocked and tagged as spyware...

Andy, we can't read minds. We do not know the intentions of affiliates when they join the network. Once they are in and they begin violating the Ts&Cs, we then need to detect them and then we can take action.

Guys, let's not start jumping to conclusions about who is behind what khc07 is experiencing. I've read through all his posts and there is just nothing there that as of yet to indicate who this is. Indeed there may be more than one unwanted application on the computer.

Second is having this type of speculation on the open forums is not the way to go about getting to the bottom of things. Even if someone has hit upon the correct entity behind this, it may very well be "gone" before CJ has the opportunity to adequately investigate.

khc07 the above is in no way meant as a slight to you. I know you just want control of your browser back to and understand what is happening.

I expressed concerns about these types of search applications around a year ago and caught a few flames from folks. They are extremely numerous now and can be very difficult to detect. I'm not defending CJ's overall compliance here because I do feel it has been lacking at times in the past, however these types of applications have surged over the last several months and they can be very difficult to detect within the Networks (ie red flags of questionable activity) because of the way many of them operate. I recently had one that took me over 3 weeks to identify when it was on the test computer using very set testing protocols and I called in assistance from one of the antispyware vendors. My point being that in fairness to CJ and the other Networks, these types of applications are not so easy to identify and there are literally hundreds and hundreds of them.

khc07, I'm going to start a private topic with you, myself and Todd so that we can help you to:
    a) get the information Todd needs for CJ to investigate this and
    b) get your computer clean.

If you are not familar with how to access your private topics, go to the blue menu bar at the top of any abw page. Click on Go --> MySpace --> Private Messaging.

Todd, it seems even when you know the intentions of affiliates you don't act on it.

This past weekend, I had dinner with some friends at their house. We started talking about home improvement, and they mentioned they were looking for something they'd seen on TV but couldn't find it anywhere. I suggested looking online for it, and they said they hardly ever buy anything online.

We did a Google search, found several affiliate sites that had the item, and as we clicked on qksrv.com links, among other network links, we were greeted with pop ups from other affiliates trying to interfere with the purchase. This is prohibited by CJ's CoC, is it not?

If it wasn't Ebates, it was 180. Or WhenU. There were so many pop ups it was ridiculous. The parents had no idea why these things were on their computer, and it was later determined that their 13 year old daughter must have downloaded something that came bundled with them.

So, we have a minor child downloading apps onto a computer without parental permission. And these companies are your star affiliates, taking advantage of situations like this, and essentially stealing from other affiliates.

I'm not as sophisticated at investigating these things as Haiko, Ben, or Ms. B is, but I could certainly tell cookie overwriting was happening, and if an order had been placed, the affiliate site we clicked the link on would not have gotten the sale.

This seems to be a typical scenario reported here at ABW time after time, month after month, year after year, yet it continues to this day. The affiliate sites we visited were very well done, and I'm certain they are among your top performers. I'm also certain they are not getting credit for all the sales they initiate, due to the shenanigans from other top performers within the CJ network who have forced software apps on unsuspecting minors.

I think it's shameful that this charade has been allowed to continue, and I do place the blame for that with the networks, because they have been negligent in enforcing their own terms. In fact, in CJ's case, they promote these apps and affiliates to merchants, all the while knowing they're taking commissions from other affiliates. It's sickening to see it happen.

When is it going to end?

    Andy

FYI - the affiliate in question joined the network on 8/7/04, the account was flagged by compliance on 8/9/04. I need to check with compliance on what has occurred.

It will be interesting to see what happens once Windows XP SP2 starts being installed in volume.

Hopefully, these incidents will drop off.

Seems the wank had a commission stealing plan ready to rape CJ and other networks pocketbooks from day one. CJ's Royally OUTING the bugger would send a strong message throughout the affiliate community.
